Hi,
I am having some difficulty setting up my dns323. I am trying to set this up with SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives. When i slide the drives in the case and push the power button the unit flashes all of its lights for about 30 seconds and then shuts off. If i only put one drive in the unit it does the same thing but it lasts about 45 seconds. If i try and start it with no drives the unit powers on and runs just fine. I thought it was a firmware problem so i tried to update it but the software wont let me in b/c it says i dont have any drives connected. So i cant update the firmware. I am at a lose for what the problem might be, is there something wrong with my unit or is there some other step that i must take to get this thing to pick up my drives. I have no idea what is going on b/c the unit powers off with both drives plugged in. Any help would be great. Both drives work and have been tested in windows. Suggestions?
Thanks
Andy
1/5mb/s and 3.0mb/s settings have both been tried

I have had issues with my box which was similar. It turned out to be that the plastic front cover somehow pushed onto the power button. Try starting the box with out the front. In my case replacing the front after it has started solved the problem.
Strangely enough I have the same disks :-D

Well i have tried starting it before i put the front cover on and it still does the same thing. But ill try it again. So you have the same drives, do they work for you? Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I got the same drives and I have had no problems with them so far.

Upon further review i noticed the drives would just start to spin up and then the unit would die. So currently im trying to get the unit to update its firmware using a wd drive i have around my house. Hopefully after the firmware update it will go. The unit i got was shipped with v1.0 firmware. What were your firmware versions when you installed the samsung drives?
Thanks

I have "the same" drives (well, 400GB, but exactly the same type). My unit was shipped with 1.00 FW and I had no problem either with one or two of these drives inserted. Gradually I updated to 1.01 and now I am running 1.02b, still without a problem.
I'd guess you may have a wrong unit - there are some people in this forum, which have bought malfunctioned units (unless I remember wrong and it was mentioned in Thecus forums I visit frequently...). I haven't noticed problems with those drives in the forum - but I may be wrong, of course. Good luck anyway

Well im starting to think that i have a faulty unit. The unit runs a WD320 gig drive sometimes but it still shuts off. With the samsung drives the unit flashes its lights and right when the drives start to spin up the unit shuts off. I think that these drives might pull more power than the unit can provide. Any other thoughts before i rma it for an exchange

I have similar drives, 400Gb samsung, no problems at all.
You should check out this posting too about toggling your SATA I / SATA II toggle jumper:
http://dns323.kood.org/forum/p764-20070 … .html#p764
I've been running with 1.5/sec (SATA I) instead of 3/sec (SATA II), no problems, no performance issues.
hope this helps!

I got exactly the same drives and I did not change any jumpers. Just put them in and it has worked great.
Except the issue with it powering down when the cover has been on during boot up.
Perhaps the power supply is bad?
