More on SMTP and a Noise question from New User.

OK; New user here. Have had my DNS-323 for less than a week and already have questions. And, to echo the sentiments of others here, D-Link support seems to be pretty much worthless! Hopefully their product will outlive their suport staff.

So I have this new 323, two WD Caviar 500 GB drives set up as Raid 1. Seems pretty sweet. I had the whole thing up and running in about 30-40 mins OOTB.  Hardware Rev is B1, Firmware Rev is 1.04.

Item #1: It seems to run quite hot, with the top surface VERY warm to the touch. I have had two occasions where there has been some sort of high-pitched whine or screech coming from the unit; lasts for a few minutes then stops. (Not a Drive failure or Head crash; I know what that sounds like!) The noise isn't really loud, like a smoke detector or anything, but it does get your attention. The first time it happened I wasn't around to see/hear for myself. Second time I was. The unit and drives were not actually being used at the time. I looked in the Users Manual for any clues, but there is NOT A WORD about any sort of audible alerts from the unit. Anyone have any ideas? Is this possbily part os the over-temp condition? (As I write this, the unit is NOT in use - it is sitting idle - and is already quite warm. The fan IS running, but is fairly quiet.)

Item #2: Configuring SMTP Email. I've read a fair bit here already about this problem. In my case, Comcast has a security FEATURE in place that is meant to control spam that forces you to use port 587 in certain cases, which is where I'm at right now. There seems to be no way to set an SMTP port for the unit when configuring these tools. However, if I'm reading - and understanding - some of this stuff, I should be able to modify the email port by using the "fun_plug" capability to allow me to enable telnet into the machine and FIX the SMTP port used. I realize that it may take a bit of hacking and experimentation to get this right, but I'm willing to do that.  What I'm looking for is whether I'm actually following what some of you guys are saying.  (I am a FORMER - very long time ago - Unix system admin, so fooling around in the shell via telnet and messing with system files isn't at all intimidating!)

So that's is my story. Any of you guys or gals out there have any words of encouragement? I really like the unit so far, but I'm concerned about the HEAT thing and would REALLY like to get the SMTP/email alerts to work.
