torrent URL

Hi i'm a bit of a newbie. Have a 1.5TB DNS 323 set up as RAID 1. keen to use the built in BitTorrent client but don't understand how to get the URL of a torrent. I currently have BitTirrent running on my laptop and when i go to download a torrent the client fires up and begins downloading. Question is what do I use to download it with the DNS client instead? If I simply paste the URL nothing happens and If i get the Tracker by getting the properties of the torrent, it says Tracker sent but doesn't download anything and the list of Torrents stays blank. Help please!

Re: torrent URL

Hi

It depends on how are you pasting the URL. Some of the URLs the DNS can parse them, while others doesn't.

I suggest you try first to download the torrent file (.torrent) and then instead of choosing the URL, choose the torrent file. The option is below the box where you put the url.

Then clic on browse and choose the torrent file.

See if that works for you.

Then, paste an example of the url you are trying to download. (Beware of what torrent you point to)

Cheers

PS. Just from curiosity, did you buy two 1.5 tb disks? Or 2 750gb disks?

Re: torrent URL

Hi
I've got 2 750GB disks.
I tried your suggestion with same results- get a message saying request sent but the number of torrents resolutely stays zero!
Is this a problem with the built in Client or am I doing something wrong?
How does ML Donkey work?

Re: torrent URL

Hi

Before anything I should warn you that if you have Raid1 you don't have 1.5 tb, you have 750 gb.  I want to set that clear in case "someone" sold you a 1.5 tb raid 1 dns323, when you have the 1/2 of that.

Honestly, when I upgraded to 1.05, I just installed the bt client and it was all working fine. Do you have a folder called BT in your DNS? It should be created when you install the BT client. Check for that folder and also check if inside there are the folders complete, incomplete and torrents. Do you see files inside of them?

ML Donkey works fine. I used to use it. But the processor went like 50% and it consumed about 20 mb sometimes. If you don't download things from the donkey network or need all kind of options, then the dns323 bt client is fine.

I just prefer it since it's simple.

Re: torrent URL

Thanks- I know I have 750GB as I chose to configure it as RAID 1- Think might be safer in the long term. I do have the folders you mentioned. Can u give me an example of a torrent downloaded and what exactly you typed into the URL field? I wonder if I need to see the port seting- mine is on default port and I don't know if and how to change this.

Re: torrent URL

I put the exact link to the .torrent file.

Mininova torrents don't work in my case. I believe the DNS323 can't parse the /get/21313 URLs.

However, if I download the torrent and then point to the .torrent file, it gets added fine.

Try this one: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1617327   (It's just a couple of Batman Wallpapers, nothing against the law. Feel free to delete it if you want to)

Re: torrent URL

No problem. I have access to my DNS323 from outside my home. It has some security issues but I can't put the torrents to download when I am at work, and then when I get home, I already have the file wink

You will need to know how to edit your router (if you have one). Let me know if you want to do it.

Ah, so you know. ML Donkey CAN parse mininova get urls and a couple of others sites too. But downloading the file and then send that it's not too hard.

Re: torrent URL

Success!
The tip of downloading the torrent and then using the file to download the torrent worked- thanks a ton!
I sure would love to be able to access the DNS from work or elsewhere and your help would be appreciated. If I download the torrent file at work and point the DNS to it will it continue to download if I delete the torrent file from the computer there?
Would have attached a snapshot of my success my alas my download is not 'safe' to show!

Re: torrent URL

Great!

If you have a router, tell me which one it is.

I have a D-Link DIR-300 and I have set up a forward rule so the X port (a difficult one, not some easy port) it's forwarded to the port 80 of the dns.

The other thing you will need it's to set up a free domain (The DNS323 itself supports dyndns.org which has free domains) so you don't have to remember the ip address every time. And also the IP changes every moment so, this eliminates that too. I have the dyndns.org account set it up in the router (if you have a new one maybe you have the option. It's called DDNS. Look it up)

And to answer your other question, yes. You can download the torrent in your work PC, enter the DNS with your browser, add the torrent and delete the file in the PC. It will continue to download smile

Re: torrent URL

Thanks. I have a netgear draft N router- I will look up the model number and let you know. Thanks for all your help- I really feel like I'm making full use of my NAS now. I have a PS3 and did you it streams .VOB files to it? With the draft N router I can watch them judder free and it only works through the NAS because if I attach them directly to the PS3 say on a ext hard disk it doesn't recognize the files.

Re: torrent URL

Well, if you want to use the built in DLNA server, then you are out of luck since it doesn't do transcoding and I believe the PS3 doesn't support .vob files directly (I have one too), but to be honest I haven't try. When you say it doesnt recognize the files, at least do you see the DNS-323 but you can't see the files? If that's the problem you have two things to check.

1) If the PS3 found the DNS-323 as a DLNA server, then maybe you are not pointing to any directory. Check that in the dns configuration page.
2) If you say that it founds it as a external disk, then press Triangle and then "Show all files" and see if that way you can access the other files. By default it only show the most common files. That way you could also plug an iPod and listen music from it.

There is also the alternative of installing twonky (I tested the trial version, since it's paid, and it works well) or ushare that's is going to be released in the near future, I think.

The only thing that REALLY worked for me was TVersity. The downside it's that you need to have your PC working, but it will transcode everything and it also allows you to fast forward and rewind, which some don't.

Re: torrent URL

Sorry I think you misunderstood me.
When I didn't have the DNS and I tried to play VOB files on my ps3 it didn't work.
Now I have the same files on the DNS and with the DLNA server the PS3 recognises and plays them!
So now that you have got me up and running with the BT on the DNS too I'm in heaven!
All that remains is for you to show me how to access it remotely and I'll never be without content to watch!
I have used Torrentvalley and the DNS is able to download all torrents from there

Re: torrent URL

xDDDDD Yes, I misunderstood you, but that's ok. No problem.

Let's see. If you have a N router, it's brand new so it should really have the options that you need.

Find these two things or something similar: DDNS and Port Forwarding. DDNS it's not that important sine you have it in the DNS-323 but from the router works best.

If you find the section about port forwarding, what you need is to open a X port (Let's say 46798, something difficult. Not the normally used 80, 443, 23, 22 ports, because you'll b out in the open) and forward that to the port 80 internally to your DNS-323 IP.

If you figure it out, great. Otherwise let me know what things you see or maybe a screen capture will be better. (You can blur the sensitive parts)

Re: torrent URL

Hi!
Been trying to do it myself but so far no success. have registered at dyndns.org. Will get screen captures later today and post them to show you what options my router has- has both DDNS and port forwarding. At work now!
Thanks

Re: torrent URL

Hey Blizzard 182!
I have decided to not try accessing the DNS remotely for now as I've had some problems with my home network and am basically working with a lower security setting. So dont want to risk anymore!
Is it ok if I PM you later if I change my mind?
BTW- having loads of fun downloading stuff viaBT(legal offcourse!)
