Does the DNS 343 handle Cat 6a cable?

I'm about to network the house with 6a...not a lot of point if the unit doesn't handle Cat 6a on 1000mb connection (also intend using jumbo frames).

Thoughts anyone?

Re: Does the DNS 343 handle Cat 6a cable?

the manual says that the 343 supports 1000mbps and jumbo frames.  I have used cat6 cabling with the 323, but I don't have a 343.

Re: Does the DNS 343 handle Cat 6a cable?

You can run gigabit ethernet with or without jumbo frame on CAT5e, CAT6, or CAT6a - in a pinch you can use CAT5, if the cable run is not too long.

You want my thoughts .... overkill.

CAT6a is rated for 10G ethernet, but only if correctly installed and with the appropriate fittings - that means jacks, patch panels, etc., rated for use with CAT6a.  If you plan to install equipment capable of those speeds, by all means go ahead, but according to SmallNetBuilder the DNS-343 didn't break the 50MB/sec barrier.

The average office doesn't need 10G ethernet, in fact the average office doesn't need gigabit ethernet (as in there is no significant benefit), the average home probably doesn't need gigabit ethernet.

Mind you - I'm not saying that gigabit doesn't have a place in the home - in fact, those homes that could use it, will make more use of it than many offices, but those are the homes of enthusiasts with servers and vast amounts of media.

Oh - don't forget to have your cable installer certify his work when he's done wink

Re: Does the DNS 343 handle Cat 6a cable?

Thanks guys, I think I will proceed with 6a as a measure of future proofing. I also intend building a home theatre PC in the next 12 months where I will want the ability to record 2 x HD channels at the same time to a storage device without skipping etc...maybe it won't be the 343, but I don't want to overload the HTPC with disks to cope with this kind of thing.
