How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

I have recently bought a DNS 323 (firmware 1.05 updated) and would like to install a BitTorrent client on it. I have also been reading this forum and it seems most people here are advanced users.

I am a basic user and usually I install programs using NNF technique (next, next, finish). I tried to find any setup on the configuration screen but was not able to do so.

Is there a place where I can find detailed explanation on how to set up a bittorrent on DNS-323?
I have Bitcomet on my PC but I would like to use the feature of DNS-323.

thanks for the help.

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

Go here: http://dns323.kood.org/  and spend some time reading. You should be able to figure it out.

Or more precisely here: http://dns323.kood.org/howto:bittorrent

Cheers

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

Hello 323Dummy, maybe you would like to use the dlink torrent client?
If so you need to use the easy search utility on the dlink web site:-
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dns_nas/DNS-323/e … 2.0.0).zip
unzip, install, next next finished.
enjoy.
There are issues with it tho, so have a read about...
PS are there any other websites you would like me to read for you? smile

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

I just installed a second disk into my 323 and when I try to run BitTorrent from EasySearch it fails and tells me to "Please Check Hard Drives".

Any help?

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

i assume you have opted for two single disks, no raid or jbod.
swap the disks from left to right.
odds are you had your single disk in the left hand bay.
cheers

I had the single disk in the right hand bay (if you're facing it). I'll try swapping. Cheers!

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

I had the same BitTorrent install error. Please check Drives.
1st Map to the Volume in the EasySearch software. Then instead of clicking on the DNS323,select the newly mapped volume.
Then you can click the BitTorrent button. You will see the status bar restarting.

This worked for me.

Good Luck

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

I have a question regarding the built in torrent client.  I have my DNS 323 (FW 1.06) with 2x 750gb seagate drives running in two volumes.  Volume 1 is a 250 gb Raid 1, and Volume 2 is a 1 tb jbod.  I use raid 1 for all my pictures, files & etc. that I want double copies of for protection.  For the torrents that I download, (tv shows, etc) I don't need to use the raid 1.  I want the torrents to download directly to the second volume (the jbod) since I don't need redundancy for those.  I asked DLink tech support how to switch the settings for the torrent client so that it would store them on the second volume, they replied stating it could not be done.  I asked them how I could change it so that Volume 1 would be the jbod, they replied saying sorry again but it cannot be done.  Then I read this:
http://dns323.kood.org/howto:bittorrent
Where it states "By default, the downloaded files are stored on Volume_1 (HD_a2). To make the files downloaded on Volume_2, create empty folders (complete, incomplete, torrents) on Volume_2 and create symbolic links on HD_a2 pointing on HD_b2. "  This sounds great, except, I'm not sure what a symbolic link is or how I would create it.  Is it simply a shortcut?  Can anyone please elaborate on this?  I am running everything "stock" on the dns and have no linux experience.  My laptop is running WinXP, but I also access the dns from my ps3 for streaming the media.
Can this "Symbolic Link" be created and installed without modding the firmware or installing this fun_plug thing that I see listed in many posts?

I searched first and read through many posts, but could not find the answers.  If I missed it, kindly link.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Michael.

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

Well, firmware version 1.05 and higher has a bittorrent client built into it, so no fun_plug required, however if you wish to use one of the other torrent clients listed on the forum, then yes, I believe you do need it installed.  I am just using the one that came with the firmware upgrade, so I have not installed any modded software such as fun_plug.

Re: How to Install BitTorrent on DNS 323

Can someone please explain:

1) how to 'manage' the STOCK bitTorrent functionality
2) what you can/cant do with it
3) how to remove it! (the process for undoing whatever easysearch does to your drives!)

I downloaded the 4.4 easysearch as suggested, I get the reboot, files created (under 'BT', and 'Nas_Prog' folders, the BT share) but I dont see anything else.
If I repeat the process of clicking the BitTorrent button in Easysearch, I get the same result (reboot and lots of file activity for minutes after boot).
Is there meant to be an area on the admin screen for BT management?

I read the posts and links above, including Dlinks site at first-stab. now, I could have missed something, but if I did it wasn't straight-forward at all!!  I think DLink are challenging me (lol!)
I dont really want to add hacks to my box to use functionality that should be there now!  if the standard BT stuff isn't good enough (as I suspect, as its already caused me problems) then I'd just not install it/remove it.
however, it would be good to 'see' this BT stuff that my firmware enables!!!

Cheers,

DHD
