I'm writhing this because I've done extensive research in multiple sources with no clear result.
I'm using dd-wrt 24sp2 and successfully vpn from my parents computer to my home computer by enabling the pptp area in dd-wrt firmware. I used these screenshots and instructions http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/VPN_(tutorial)
I know its successful because when I do an ip check from a browser from my parent's house, I'm using the ip address from my home computer. Moreover when I type 192.168.1.1 its goes to my home router admin screen. Also I can get to my dns-323 control panel by going to 192.168.1.200 which i have assigned as the static ip at home.
Problem is (and i've read on here) that once you're connected its like you're at home, however the dns-323 drive is not appearing under "My Network Places/Microsoft Windows Network/Workgroup/Dns323" like it does when I'm at home. I want to be able to access my drive from anywhere and have the ability to drag and drop from Windows Explorer.
I've tried so may different things and spent so much time on this that I'm at my breaking point. Can someone please steer me in the right direction. Your help is most appreciated.

It is most likely because you do not have a WINS server on your home network (or a dns server if you try to access it directly by name). Connect to the dns using its ip address via a mapped drive, it should connect fine. Please see a very simplified explaination I wrote here: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t3054-Inte … S-323.html
Windows network explorer has to recieve information from a networked device an almost acts like a WINS server for itself (not really, though). This means that it does not like jumping on a network after booting. Since the DNS is probably sleeping, it is not going to send out a signal saying "I'm here". The Windows Network is full of problems, and this is one of them. Heck, even sometimes on the same local network, it may take hours for a known device to appear. This is what the hosts and lmhost files on each computer are for. You manually enter the host name and ip address of each device you want to find by name, and it will always go there before finding a server (assuming you actually had one).

Success! For anyone out there having the same problem, don't browse for the drive but instead do it manually in the map drive area like this example: \\192.168.xxx.xxx\Volume_1\
Thanks bq041 for your help!!!!!
