Hi,
I'm fairly new to all of this but I succeed to install your 0.12 builts on my CH3SNAS and it runs pretty well, with one exeption:
I don't see any *.mp3 files on the PS3 listed, although the structure for the artists, albums, ... exist. Have tried both, builtin and js configuration. The strange thing is, that on my iPhone I can see and play all the mp3s using plugplayer.
Anybody could advise what might be wrong?
ThanksMake sure your not trying to view the music files folder in the Video section of the XMB. You need to go to the Audio section on the XMB and then you will be able to see you music files. I did the same damn thing until I figured it out.
That was exactly my bad. Guess I outed myself as a n00b now :-).
Anyways - thanks for this great stuff!

Thanks for your help. I added that to my config, and I also noticed I had this line set wrong: <map from="m4a" to="audio/mpeg"/> and changed it to <map from="m4a" to="audio/mp4"/>.
I have some .m4a files that won't play on my PS3. I think those were encoded with Nero. The ones done in iTunes play fine. At least the tags now work!

Cool I'm happy to see you got it working.

I've also noticed how much better Mediatomb works over Twonky. For instance, my HD mpg files now have a correct timecode instead of all 9's, and I am able to FF and RW these MPG files without the huge delay. These are MKV files with 5.1 audio that I ran through MKV2VOB. There is a bit more of memory usage, but its worth it....and FREE!

After getting this 0.12 built of MT running like a dream on my CH3SNAS, I would like to ask whether it is possible to create thumbnails for videos with this version.
I've read that you need ffmpegthumbnailer and ffmpeg installed, but I'm not sure if and what I have to do manually to make this work.
Could someone please explain?
Thanks

It won't work. Simple answer is the NAS doesn't have enough horsepower. Also, I think this also uses floating point math and the NAS doesn't have a floating point unit (FPU). There is no ffmpeg or ffmpegthumbnailer support built into this static build.

I just started up the default build that came from the package manager of ffp0.5.
Is this not sufficient?
Also, does this support streaming in browser? I like the interface and the ease, but I'd like anyone to connect, and stream the data -not download.

Sufficient is how you define it. This build of MediaTomb is different than Fonz's build in these ways:
1) This build supports javascript import scripts
2) Supports m4a and wma tag support
3) Works on DirecTV HR2x receivers
4) Supports audio transcoding
5) It was built with Curl support for transcoding of some online streams
6) YouTube video support (with no transcoding)
7) Apple movie trailer viewing (no transcoding)
MediaTomb does not support streaming in a browser. As far as I know, it only streams to uPnp AV clients. It will not stream to WMP in XP or Vista, but will stream to the new WMP in Windows 7.

Very cool! Thank you very much for the informative reply!
EDIT:
Is there a client for windows that WILL stream? I've been searching high and low for it. I might even be content with the d-link pnp server.

Hi,
I have it installed and database created via the HTML interface, the issue is that the PS3 see the directories but not the files in it. I could make it working before with the one included in FFP 5.0
Any idea ?

For my FLAC albums, Mediatomb is listing each song twice. This doesn't happen for my mp3 albums. FLACs are recognized and imported to the database, so when viewing the directory, each song is listed once, but in the database, there are two entries for each song. Any ideas? I'm almost there...

I'm still trying to get some kind of thumbnails displayed on my PS3 for all my videos.
As a thumb Windows guy I would appreciate to get some help from you experts, please.
I have added the following stuff to my config.xml:
<mimetype-contenttype>
:::::
<treat mimetype="video/mpeg" as="thumbnail"/>
::::
</mimetype-contenttype>
<transcoding enabled="yes">
<mimetype-profile-mappings>
<transcode mimetype="video/mpeg" using="thumbnailer"/>
</mimetype-profile-mappings>
<profiles>
<profile name="thumbnailer" enabled="yes" type="external">
<mimetype>image/jpeg</mimetype>
<accept-url>no</accept-url>
<first-resource>yes</first-resource>
<accept-ogg-theora>no</accept-ogg-theora>
<agent command="thumb" arguments="%in %out"/>
<buffer size="1048576" chunk-size="131072" fill-size="262144"/>
</profile>
</profiles>
</transcoding>
The thumb script looks like this:
cover=$1".cover.jpg"
cp "$cover" $2
The cover images all reside in the same directory as the *.m2ts with the same file name as the movie and ".cover.jpg" appended.
I don't see any thumbnail images on the PS3, but I guess I haven't understood the FIFO concept of Mediatomb; maybe somebody can help me to make a workable script for sending the jpg to this FIFO correctly; no conversion or scaling is required, because the images already have a size of 128x128 pixels.
Thanks for any help to make this running.

Is it possible for this to become an easier to install package?

As mentioned earlier in this thread, make sure you are browsing the correct item on the PS3 (music, video, photos). Also, I sometimes see an issue when the DNS-323 drives are spun down and the PS3 gives up too soon waiting for the drives to spin up. Usually, restarting the PS3 fixes this.

Are you also importing a playlist with the flac songs? Importing a playlist and also importing the individual songs will result in duplicate songs. This is the reason I do not put playlist files in the same directory as the individual songs.

I don't see how it could be any easier (unless there is a Windows installer and that won't happen.) I created a static build with all libraries built into the mediatomb binary. You do not have to install any additional dependencies unless you wish to use transcoding.
This is all you have to do to get it up and running:
1) Copy the tar.gz file to the Volume_1 directory. You can do this using the Windows explorer.
2) Telnet (or ssh) into the DNS-323 (this requires a fun plug install)
3) cd /mnt/HD_a2
4) tar -xzf mediatomb-0.12.0-SVN2017-static-dns323.tar.gz
5) cd mediatomb12
6) ./mediatomb.sh
...and you are up and running There is a bit more work if you want to use transcoding and the instructions are in the first post of this thread. You will also need to access the WebUI to import the media files (http://ip.of.nas:49152). If port 49152 doesn't work, try 49153.

that worked fine. thanks man
1 question.
After i got into the web interface and added some moves and videos.

One other person saw this error, but could not get it to repeat. Did you make any changes to config.xml before importing these files? What type of video file were you importing?
If it is a corrupt database, all you have to do is delete the mediatomb.db file (in the config directory) and mediatomb will create a new one the next time it is started. The easiest way to stop the mediatomb process is to issue a killall mediatomb from the command line.

Yes, I do have playlists in the FLAC folders - I have them in the mp3 folders too, but that doesn't seem to have the same effect. Is there a way to modify the import scripts to account for this? Is that what the playlist.js script does?

I can confirm that getting up and running is quite easy. I have no linux experience, but I was able to get everything set up in 30 minutes or so (FLAC transcoding took a while longer, but just follow boilerjt's instructions and you'll be fine).

Yes, the playlist.js script handles the playlist importing. Just make sure that <virtual-layout type="js"> in config.xml so that it uses the *.js files and not the default builtin import code.

Is there a way to block importation of playlists? If I take out or remove reference to playlist.js I get an error.

How would someone identify a file format such as MKV to mediatomb to simply pass and serve the file without transcoding it directly to the media device?.. I run a pair of DSM-750's which handle MKV just fine on their own and simply just need to serve this format to the devices.. no need to transcode them..
Wonder what configuration options I need to set to allow this?... Right now using twonky as it seems to work find for this and other formats with transcoding but would prefer an open source solution like mediatomb..
Any suggestions?
thanks

Try adding this to the mappings in config.xml:
<map from="mkv" to="video/x-matroska"/>
This will give this mimetype to all files with the mkv extension when importing. If your device accepts this mimetype, it should play with no problems.
