questions about dropbear and ssh key generation

Hi!

Ive been trying to understand how to get password free logins to work on the dns-323, but I cant figure out the username part.

1.  On my computer my user is x, how do I use ssh-keygen to generate a key to login to the nas as y, or do I have to login as root? I have root login disabled atm. Is it easier to generate the keys on the NAS?

2.  should the .ssh folder with the autorized_keys file be in the home folder of root or of the user that I want to login as?

3. As I have understood it, I dont need to convert the keys to dropbear format to login to the NAS right?

Thx a lot and sorry for the noobish questions!

Re: questions about dropbear and ssh key generation

It took me a little while to figure this out, too.  I'm not sure this will help, but here's some instructions that you can follow:

http://backupnetclone.sourceforge.net/B … bution.txt

Start with the section called "[create SSH public/private key pair on a Windows PC since dropbear (the SSH server on the DNS-323) isn't very good at that]"
