data integrity

I was thinking earlier about how large drives are getting.  The impression I have from reading various hardware sites is that the quality of the drives hasn't improved.  Combine the two and you end up with more individual drives experiencing problems with data integrity.  The drive remains working but you lose the ability to access certain sections of it.  Sometimes in the process a file loses a portion of its data.  That is bad. bad. bad. bad.

With two drives in standard mode can I use one drive to check the integrity of the data against the other drive?  I want to ensure a bit by bit exactness.  My precious 1s and 0s  must stay where they belong!
