2TB drives and DNS323 play well?

With the impending launch of WD Caviar Green 2TB, i wonder if there will be compatibility issues with the DNS323?

Even before 1.06 firmware was released with official support of 1.5TB HDD, i believe there are those who have been using them on the DNS323 on version 1.04 or 1.05 without any problems...

Since the ext2 fs can support up to 32TB volume size, i suppose it should work fine...

Reason i'm asking is that i'm running out of space and intend to upgrade my 2*750GB seagates with 2*2TB WD green...

It'd be very disappointing if the DNS323 doesn't play well with the 2TB... I've grown very fond of my DNS323 and the fact that it is a cost effective NAS solution for home use... It may not be the best in its class but it certainly does what it is advertised to do...

And the fact that it might be able to hold 4TB of data in a case the size of my kid's shoebox... If it works of course...

Insights anyone?

Of course nobody has tested it yet, because they are not yet available. But I wouldn't expect problems. AFAIKS there are no 'special frontiers' between 1.5 and 2 TB. Beyond 2TB the number of sectors will be bigger than 2^32, and I can imagine that will cause problems.

On 27th January WD announced the availability of the 2TB models:

And is very soon available in european online stores:

Some reviews:

Whoever tests this drive in the DNS-323, please post and add to the list of supported or unsupported drives.

Re: 2TB drives and DNS323 play well?

I am amazed that no one has replied to this yet (I have been following this post for awhile). I got tired of waiting and decided to try it, I have now been running the WD5000C032 on my DNS-323 for about a month, with firmware v1.06 and it has run fine. Of course i will upgrade to v1.08 when it comes out of beta but for all those wondering "will it work w/o problems?", the answer is "for me yes, works fine not problems yet after having moved 4tb of data onto these drives"

Cheers

Gaiko- what is the average transfer speed and internal temperature with 2TB disks?

The file system is using more RAM for caching with bigger disks, which is in short supply in DNS323.

I also believe that the TDP is higher leading to increased internal temperature?

That's not how filesystem caching works.

Sweeping statement indeed, you can read last part of this article http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/2151.

Certainly ext2 FS cache tends to grow with the size of the file system and the amount of data stored on it. As DNS-323 cannot satisfy the demand for physical memory it is likely to lead to more cache misses resulting in slower performance.  However it may be insignificant in the real world tests hence the query related to 2TB network transfer speed.

Re: 2TB drives and DNS323 play well?

Yes, but what you said implies that the cache must by definition be related to the size of the filesystem, which isn't how it works - the cache grows to fill available RAM as requests are fulfilled, but can be trimmed back as memory pressure from other processes grows. So all that will happen with large drives is that the efficiency of the cache will be reduced*. Given that a NAS will largely be used for non-random sequential access (eg streaming a video), that's not a huge issue.

* Unless, perhaps, the filesystem is so large that the basic fs data can't be kept in memory. I doubt the DNS-323 will encounter that problem with 2 bays - not for a few years, anyway!
