FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

I'm new to the DNS 323 and rather like it honestly.

Now no matter what time of day I put my ear to the case and I'd almost sware the drives are still spinning, I don't hear any clicking like its being accessed, but it seems like there is a hummm from both of them. I have the settings set to 30minutes because I was planning on using it a lot and didn't want to have to wait for it to spin up. Now I just changed it to 10minutes because I want to see what it does. Does the drive normally always spin or is the hibernation setting something else that I'm not getting.

I'm running 2 500gig Western Digital Green Drives and Firmware 1.06

I had the fun_plug hack installed, but decided to remove it and format the drives just to make sure they where clean of it. Nothing against it, but there where a lot of things in it and I didn't know what ports it opened and didn't want to leave it out there open. Sure its on my local network behind a router, but I'll give it a whirl later.

Thanks

I'm running Raid1

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Just thinking of things I do have the set clock feature turned on, but I will turn that off when I get home.
No servers are on, but maybe ftp which I'm not allowing access from outside my network. I guess I should make sure all of the servers are on unless they are on by default I've not turned anything on, but the set time which now that I think of it is rather unimportant right now.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

As well when I did have the fun_plug installed and did a "uptime" it showed like 13234324 days or something odd like that and the processor seemed to be running pretty hard. 2.04 1.60 1.20 or something like that. I didn't put much thought into it until recently. Could there be a wild process running thats causing mine not to shutdown?

I'm not purposely bumping I'm coming up with things that I've noticed and struck me as being odd.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Yeah I found it after I spammed up this post. Ok, Im a dope.

So it looks like some people have issues and some don't. Looks like the fix is either installing fun_plug and doing some tweaking or resorting to going back to 1.05.

As well looks like on dlinks forum its pretty well known there is a problem, but nothing that says hey heres the fix.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Ok I go home for lunch and there doesn't seem to be any sound coming out of the box. I look over and notice there are 3 lights. The only thing I changed was the delay from 30minutes back to 10minutes.

I remember reading somewhere that the light goes dim, but maybe I am wrong.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Other than not knowing if that image above is normal I decided to give 1.05 a try. I'll know when I get home this evening if it shutdown.

I also found this on the net and a group of guys where talking about that they where having problems with the WD Green drives. Of course which I just happen to have. Go figure. wink

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Alot of ppl have already reported this problem with FW1.06.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=3855.0

However, D-link has ignored/rejected/denied it.
I even lodged a formal/official bug/support.
They just came back and said they could be reproduce the problem and there is NO bug/issue.

I downgraded back to FW1.05, and the drives hibernate as they should.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Welp I went back to 1.05 and the fan would never turn off. So I decided to give 1.06 another try. Well now the drives and fan shut off like they are supposed to. Just cracks me up. I still have what looks like the photo above I posted, but there is no sound coming from the box which I guess means nothing is running. hahahaha

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Just a comment - I would suggest a reset to factory defaults after the upgrade, this resolved the problem for me - and the only front panel indication of hibernation is a "darkened" power switch, it does look a lot like the photo above, but it's slightly different

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Man this drive is going to drive me bonkers. I went home at lunch since well I live 1/4 a mile away and its still on. Im wondering if there is just a bug.

Last time it worked. I did a reset and let it idle it shut off
Last time it worked I downloaded some torrents through the manager

This time and I'd almost sware the time before it didn't shut off I mapped to it as a drive and grabed a torrent from my windows machine, which of course the PC turned off on its own and I assumed the 323 would as well after a while. That almost sounds like Samba is hanging or something

I'll give the reset to default trick a try and then set it up again. If that doesn't work then I'll give 1.05 a try again and a reset to default trick a try. Of course 1.05 has the fan bug and 1.06 has a don't want to shut off bug.

I suppose after I tinker with this for a few more days I'll give the fun_plug more research and see if there is an avenue there. Worst case I suppose I could just turn it off when I'm not using it, but that sounds so 90's. wink

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Welp after a reset to default settings things seem to be working. The fan doesn't come on when I think it should, but thats another topic all together.

Heck it seems to be shutting off at or around 5minutes and even when I'm using it. hahaha I"ll leave it alone for a bit and adjust the time and then start tinkering with things.

Have you thought about getting your own message board rather than rambling?
Or using you're grammer,  msg bored?

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

I apologize if I appear to be rambling. My intent was to more or less log what I'm finding. Seeing this is a forum I only assumed others would either interact or read and come to the same conclusion. I don't pretend to be a computer hacker, software engineer or for that matter a grammar teacher. I'm very logical and try to figure things out on my own and when I don't I ask for a little direction and try to go from there.

Thank you for the attempted insult if that’s what you want to call it I'll let this thread die since I found my solution and I know your eyes will be gratefull. As for the grammar comment, look through some of your own posts. You're not exactly on top of it either my friend.

My Solution was after the Firmware update to 1.06 reset all settings.

Well, I read your series of ramblings with great interest. Guess I better go try this 1.05 fix, groan.

Thanks for clearing up things kizer... smile

I guess I'd better downgrade the FW to 1.05 after all! Rather annoying to do so - but probably better for the HDDs. big_smile

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

It doesn't matter which firmware you use - hibernation works on ALL of them.  What you need to do is track down why your unit won't go into hibernation, which is most likely something in your environment.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Are you using Twonky? This is really a FYI. About a month after I purchased the 323, I added the funplug and and I started using Twonky. The 323 always remained in standby mood before I added the funplug but after I added the funplug and started to use Twonky I noticed that the large blue LED would light up, there would be disc activity and It seemed to be certain intervals but I was unsure of the timing. I went through twonky settings and found that changing the "rescan in minutes" to 0 has allowed the 323 to remain in standby until the 323 is accessed.

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

no I'm not using Twonky. I have installed chroot_debian - but that hardly can be the issue. I'm pretty sure it's a firmware thing, perhaps the FTP server.

I tried turning the Itunes-Server off, and that seemed to work for a short while - and then it began running again.

Otherwise, I'll try from scratch, with a vanilla installation with firmware 1.06 (FTP and BT turned off) installed minus fun_plug and chroot_debian - and see how it works out. smile

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

Hmm... i downgraded to fw 1.05, removed BT and erased the FTP users (all users on the drive, in fact) and now the blinking is gone... there is a constant sound from the drives instead now... it's not like there access to the drives, just a silent "humming" sound - perhaps it's just the fan. I'm not sure it this is hibernation - but I just heard the sound of the one of the drives firing up... (you know the small jet-engine sound)

Re: FirmWare 1.06 Drives always on.

What about firmware 1.07??  (BTW I have the same problem).  Unit also is always warm to the touch.  (I am on firmware 1.06 but will probably wait and see what 1.08 does (seems to fix a lot of things)

I actually tried 1.07 before I downgraded to 1.05 - and the damn thing still doesn't work! wink

Well, we're just gonna wait and see I guess! big_smile
