Porting PSM (PS3 Media Server) to DNS-323?

.
  I am hoping I can spark some interest from some of you 'nix geeks out there!  I don't know about you... but I'm getting tired of all the false-hyped and half-assed implementations of uPNP/DLNA servers out there.  I know that sounds very ungrateful, but I am appreciative of everyone's effort, and I realize that this is an evolution process.  However, I purchased the $150.00 DNS-323 & 2 x $70.00 500g HDD's to enjoy watching/listening to media content streamed to my $400.00 PS3 thru my $400.00 Onkyo 7.1 receiver out to my $2400.00 Samsung LCD and $325.00 Sony speakers, not to re-familiarize myself with unix commands @ the expense of $3,815.00!  (christ... reading this makes it sound like I have more dollars than sense!)

  Setting aside NAS for a second... I have experimented with many of the popular PC solutions but one really stands out from the crowd.  PS3 Media Server (PSM for short) written by shagrath has fantastic potential imho.  It's freeware, open source, JAVA, and... it WORKS!  About the only downside (for me) is... it's tethered to the PC, which is what I want to ween myself from.  This thing works great though.  Transcodes most formats (including .mkv) and streams anything else... to the PS3 at least.  Unfortunately, I don't have the experience needed to be compiling unix binaries or I would definately work on this.  About the only concern I have is, does the DNS-323 have enough ass-end to transcode on the fly. See the links below for the program.

Current features
================

- Ready to launch and play. No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing.
- All your folders are directly browsed by the PS3. There’s an automatic refresh also.
- Real-time video transcoding via Avisynth/FFmpeg in MPEG2 + experimental seeking.
- DTS -> LPCM real time muxing. Lossless transcoding !
- OGG/FLAC/MPC Audio transcoding
- Thumbnail generation for Videos
- All formats PS3 natively supports: MP3/WMA, JPG/PNG/GIF/TIFF, and all kind of videos (AVI, MP4, TS, M2TS, MPEG) the ps3 is willing to play
- ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders
- Support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb
- Internet TV / Web Radio support with MPlayer/VLC

Re: Porting PSM (PS3 Media Server) to DNS-323?

As much as this would be a great app for the DNS-323, I do not think it can be ported.  First off, Java is a real resource pig and I'm not sure if it has been ported.  The next obstacle is the transcoding.  I have successfully gotten some audio transcoding working in MediaTomb, but this required finding transcoding apps that are fixed point (integer math) and these can be hard to find.  PMS uses mencoder (with lots of floating point) and tsmuxer (closed source not ported to DNS-323), so this is a problem.

I have recently purchased a PS3 and MediaTomb is working great for me.  I am using it to transcode flac audio "on the fly" with no problems.  When it comes to mkv, I use the Windows version of tsmuxer to remux the mkv into a ts file (saving the ts directly to the DNS-323.) I then import the ts into MediaTomb and it plays perfectly on my PS3.  If the mkv has dts audio, I convert the mkv audio to ac3 using Popcorn MKV Audio Converter http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PopCorn_ … oConverter then use tsmuxer.  This process only takes a few minutes per movie.
