missing space after format

I just received my DNS 323 and installed two 750GB samsung spinpoint. These were formatted as RAID 1. During the formatting, it shows 748GB available. After formatting, the DNS config web page shows 736GB available, Sounded reasonable enough from what I've been told about swap spaces and what not that might be needed by the system

However, the issue comes after mapping the drive to my (3) Vista and (1) XP machine. The machines show only 686 available!....that's over 60GB un-accounted for.

Email to tech support went unanswered, and call to tech support took me up to what they call advance tech level 3 support.....and they ended up telling me nothing. They know about it, but can't tell me why and how to resolve it, and have no plans to address it. All they will do is test for me to see if I can store beyond 686 without issues...not very helpful.

Does anyone know what's going on, I would love to know before deciding if I should send this unit back

Thanks

Re: missing space after format

Windows is reporting giga binary bytes, where one 1 gibibyte = 2^30 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Hard drive manufacturers are using giga decimal bytes, where 1 gigabyte = 1000^3 bytes = 1,000,000,000 bytes.

686GiB windows bytes thus equal 1,073,741,824 * 686 = 736,586,891,264 = 736GB.

That's HDD storage 101; I'm surprised nobody at D-Link was able to help you.

Re: missing space after format

thanks for the info
that confirmed what someone else had just mentioned as well. I'll give Dlink another call to see

Re: missing space after format

Just look at the total size of your primary OS drive reported by Windows. It will be significantly "smaller" than the hard drive capacity you come to know (e.g. 320GB, 640GB, 750GB, 1TB, etc).

Nothing specifically to do with D-Link really.
