Transfering RAID1 partition to DNS-323

Hi,
I currently run a 2x500gig Seagate SATA on an old computer that I want to get rid off and I am looking into transferring my file server to the DNS-323. I was wondering if someone can point me into the right direction for:

1) What would be the easiest way to transfer the two drives from computer to the DNS-323? Can I do this without losing the information on the 2 drives? I presume I would need to reformat them both? Or can I rebuild the array from the existing hard drives?
2) I have also an external 500gig WD USB drive that I would like to set up for nightly backups. I presume I will be able to attach this to the USB of DNS-323 and set up nightly backups? This way I would run RAID1 in the DNS-323 and use the external drive for the backup of the RAID1 to take to an external location in case something happens?

Thanks!

Re: Transfering RAID1 partition to DNS-323

You will need to backup the data on your existing RAID array, create a new array after installing the drives in the DNS-323 and then transfer the data to the new array.

WIth regard to backing up the DNS-323 via the USB port, out of the box, the USB port only supports a printer or a UPS - however, it is possible, through the use of fun_plug to add the required support.

Re: Transfering RAID1 partition to DNS-323

Just a quick follow up question on performance. I read that DNS-323 provides about 12-20mbps throughput on a Gigabit network. How would this compare to my existing standalone server (Athlon XP1800+) with PCI SATA controller? I do a lot of HDV video streaming on the network, I know that 801b/g does not have the bandwidth throughput, but does DNS-323 suffice?

Thanks!
