File transfering to NAS

I'm new to these forums and I've read a lot of topics about main users "Not using FTP".  I use FTP because I access my NAS from an external IP.  If people use local only, what do you use? If you access from external IP, do you use anything other than FTP?

Re: File transfering to NAS

With an out of the box DNS-323 there are two ways to transfer files -  ftp & CIFS/SMB (Common Internet File System/Server Message Block).

SMB is an old IBM protocol, that became a defacto standard when Microsoft started developing network operating systems, and was subsequently renamed to CIFS - it's generally not considered secure enough for use across the public internet, but it is the norm on LANs and may be used safely across a VPN.

Depending on whom you speak to, ftp, whilst the defacto standard for file transfer across the internet, is also considered insecure to varying extents, primarily because of a lack of encryption.
