Securing smb/samba

I've setup smb/samba so I can map the network drive from an external IP. The problem I have is it's open to all. I edited the smb files in /etc/samba.  I've now managed to make it so if you run \\hostname\ you can open volume 1 but see nothing. If you map the drive, you can see all the files.  Can someone post a quick guide to setting up a login for the smb/samba?  I'll post more info about what I did later if need be.

Re: Securing smb/samba

I would not suggest using SMB over the internet, it not secure (encrypted) and is
very "chatty", and because of that some ISP intentional block the ports that SMB uses.

A better (more secure) approach is to setup a VPN server and use SMB within an
encrypted VPN tunnel.
