Use as main router?

Hello

Yesterday I bought a Ch3wnas in the hopes of using it as a main wireless router/webserver (our entire house uses wifi). After a morning of checking out this forum, I have learnt a lot, including that that's not possible. It doesn't support NAT.

But then again, this thing runs Linux. Is there a way of installing a package in the train of thought of DD-WRT? If so, in which direction should I be looking?

On an unrelated note, on numerous occasions I've found the opinion on here that "there shouldn't be an easy to install hacked firmware" because people will want different things anyway. But I disagree, I think the majority of people would be happy with something they can easily install which offers a fixed set of extra's. I don't even care if it's up-to-date: if it offers more than the standard firmware, I'll happily install it.

Re: Use as main router?

No easy way to accomplish this. I might say it is impossible.

In reality, you could compile a custom kernel (look wiki) with necessary features like wan port and install gentoo (look gentoo.org handbook). But at current moment I have only been able to use wifi in gentoo as unencrypted mode (look rt2x00.serialmonkey.com).

Re: Use as main router?

Wow, that's a fast response, kudos.

And I guess that settles it. Too bad, when I saw "access point" in the description I optimistically mistook it to mean "router".

Re: Use as main router?

I forgot to mention that if you replace minipci wifi card with something else, which have working wpa1/2 enabled driver for 2.4 kernel, then it is more likely doable.
rt61 chip based cards is probably cheapest replacements.

But still, you will need to figure out by yourself (with google) how to setup a router using gentoo or debian linux.
