Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

So I know that there have been a number of problems with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS drives, but right now they offer the best $/megabyte performance and I was thinking of picking two up for a RAID1 configuration for my new DNS-323. I heard there are firmware issues that allegidly have now been resolved, but I want to get other users input.

WD does not make a comparative 1.5tb, should I risk it with the Seagate, or just stick with the 1tb WD Green/Black drives for the DNS-323.

Like most of your, its going to be a RAID1 photo keeping all shared files including home pictures, videos, etc.

Thanks!

Re: Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

I tried and tried to get Seagate Baracuda 1.0 TB 7200.11 drives to work in my DNS-323 when I bought it last fall.  New drives - DOA out of the box.  Drives failing (read/write errors) after only hours of operation.  Hours of diagnostic scans to map out bad sectors... Only to have new bad sectors appear shortly theereafter.  Same luck trying them in a Windows PC or the DNS-323.  RMA'ed 3 or 4 of them before throwing in the towel for a refund.  Apparently a lot of the drives manufactured in Thailand were no good.  YMMV.

I went with WDC Caviar Black and haven't looked back.  No problems at all with them.  I will not trust a 7200.11 (at least not the 1 TB or larger) with any of my data.

Re: Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

I have 8x 702.11 1TB Seagate drivers and they are all working fine.

The latest firmware upgrade did make a bid difference in terms of their I/O performance on my PC.

Re: Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

A month or two ago Best Buy had the Seagate 1.5TB drives on sale for less than what Newegg was selling OEM drives for so I reluctantly bit on two of them in spite of all the problems I have heard across the internet. When I got them home I was really reluctant to use them because as soon as I opened them there were the dreaded words "Made In Thailand" staring at me from both drives.

A quick check of the firmware version on the drive labels run through Google did not yield much except nebulous references that this firmware revision was supposed to be one of the ones that were supposed to fix all the problems people have been experiencing with these drives.

In the end I still didn't feel 100% comfortable using them as I'm that paranoid with my data, but I figured if I ran into problems they'd be an easy return to Best Buy & I'd keep copies of all the data I put on them in my DNS-323.

They replaced a single 750GB 7200.10 drive and other than a couple bouts of frustration with the dread 94% formatting error they have really been solid drives. They spin up and down multiple times a day every day as I use them for a while and then re-enter hibernation.

Your experience may differ, but as of right now I'm pleased.

Re: Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

I certainly hope Seagate got the issues with the large capacity 7200.11 drives resolved.  If so, I'm happy for all that got the good ones. I was always a big proponent of Seagate drives (even was a stock holder in Seagate).  My experience with the 7200.11 drives was so disheartening and frustrating I just had to go a different route for my own peace of mind.  I bought the DNS-323 to serve as a backup device and primary storage for several PC's in my home network, and I just wanted disks that at least worked flawlessly out of the box.

FYI, I did not just install the disks in the DNS-323 and go "live" with it when I got the disks.  I first installed them in a spare Windows PC so I could partition, format, and run diagnostics and read/write tests on them for a few days to make sure they were solid before putting them in the DNS.  It also allowed me to run the SeaTools utilities to verify the disks were sound.  Unfortunately, the disks wouldn't even pass the SeaTools diagnostics without problems that needed to be corrected. sad

Re: Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

I've hade both Seagate and Maxtor fail on me.

So far no casualties with WD drives so that is what I get these days, the old drives, a 20GB drive was still in working condition when I opted for a bigger capacity drive, and another 160GB drive I transfered to my office PC.

Re: Verdict on Seagate 1.5TB drives?

I have 4x 1.5TB 7200.11 Seagate running CC1G firmware and they have been working fine in RAID.

I did manage to get CC1H firmware from Seagate for my drives but I haven't flashed them yet as I haven't had the chance to run SeaTools.
