I started to set up my DNS-323 today. I just fitted and formatted my Seagate 750gig drive. Before I transfer across 600gigs worth of data I want to clarify a few things. I am new to SMB shares, Samba, groups, policies permissions etc.
Do I have this right: I have to set up users with permissions on the DNS 323?? Cause I can already see and browse the DNS Volumes in Network Places on the PC without setting up any users etc What are the advantages of setting up users?
If I do need to set up users what does that entail? There will be 2 PC's, a laptop and 4 Xboxes running XBMC accessing the data on the DNS-323.
The other problem I am having is getting my Dell AIO962 printer to work with the 323's print server. I have followed the instructions and I can see the printer connected to the 323 and its status shows as Ready but nothing prints. I read somewhere here that GDI printers don't work and it does seem that the Dell AIO962 is a GDI printer but then again I have seen posts by others with GDI printers who seemingly have gotten them to work. Could this be a firewall issue, a router issue, a 323 issue. Does the PC doing the printing need to be set up as a user on the 323 for it to be able to print via the 323's print server.

With users you can restrict usage with passwords and such otherwise by default everyone has read/write permissions.
