I am having a problem mapping a drive to the DNS-323 on one computer. It is working correctly on 2 computers in my home but I want to map a third computer which is a laptop. I can ping the DNS-323. I can open the Web configuration page from this computer but it will not show up in the Easy Search Utility. I have disabled the firewall and still it will not show up. If I try to map the drive manually it will pop up with a dialog box and the username is grayed out with \\NAS1\Guest so I can't change the username. It won't take any password I enter.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Try to upgrade the firmware to 1.03. I had the same problem which disappeared after the upgrade.

Thanks for the idea. I did upgrade to firmware 1.03 and it still will not show up with the EasySearch tool. I am using EasySearch utility version 3.5. Same thing when I try to map a drive manually as well. Any other ideas?

Rheims,
You should check your local security policy.
Type "secpol.msc" in Start > Run
Expand "Local Policies" > "Serucity Options"
Scroll down to "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level.
It needs to be "Send LM & NTLM responses.
If it's anything else it may not work with the Samba version on the DNS-323.
Note that this goes for Windows XP as well as Vista
P.S. A reboot should not be necessary for this to take effect.

If you have a Home Edition of Vista (Basic or Premium), the method above will not work because you can't access local security policies. Here's the alternate fix:
1. Click Start\All Programs\Accessories\Run
2. Type "regedit"
3. Press enter
4. In the left pane, expand these folders: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
5. In the left pane, click on the folder named "Lsa"
6. In the right pane, double-click "LmCompatibilityLevel"
7. Change the value to 1 and press enter
8. Close regedit
9. Restart your computer

I am running Windows XP Tablet OS. The local security policy is set right.
I did finally get it to work.
I went into the NAS and setup a username of Guest and assigned it a password. Then it allowed me in. Funny thing is after logging in once as guest the next time I accessed the drive it allowed me to type in any username. Everything appears to work fine now.

I'm a new user of the 323 and have a problem similar to the original post. Here's the history:
1) Installed two Seagate 500Gb drives, formatted with ext3, started up fine, mapped NAS as drive f: on primary computer
2) "upgraded" firmware to 1.03, got error message about stability with ext3, reformatted to ext2 OK
3) Drive no longer visible as drive f:, cannot be seen using EasySearch on either of two computers. Server shows up on DCHP client table, can be reached/controlled through web utility, is visible in "My Network Places" and can be read and written to.
4) I have enabled read/write access to the root using the "all accounts" button.
I'm going to try the suggestion of creating a "guest" account with password.
Any other possible causes known?
thanks

Update to drive mapping issue......
1) Based on suggestions from Newegg board, tried a fixed IP instead of DCHP - no change
2) Based on another suggestion on Newegg board, turned off Windows Firewall - no change
3) Tried setting up "Guest" account - unable to access drive at all now
4) Restored factory defaults, now two drives are visible on My Network Places, a Volume 1 and a Volume 2 with the same test data showing on both - it looks like the RAID 1 setting has been lost and and the physical drives are now configured as independent drives
I'm going to try reformatting again and resetting as RAID 1 though I'm sure the data will be lost.
This device does seem pretty buggy.

Hi Russperry,
Your problem sounds like what I went through myself just yesterday.
I had been waiting for my DNS 323 to arrive for about 2 months so I had plenty of time to read all the issues people have had on this forum.
In all the excitement of finally getting my hands on it, I to had forgotten to upgrade the firmware to 1.02.
I first chose Raid 1 and Ext 3 - I have 2 x seagate 750GB sata drives "ST3750640NS 750GB" (links removed for 3Gb/s).
It told me my total memory was only 690Mb (something like that), I thought that was a bit low but I formatted anyway.
After format was completed, I followed the mapping procedure and it worked fine (appearing as G on my pc).
I started copying data across from my pc to the 323 when I thought I'd better check what firmware revision its come with and sure enough it was only 1.01.
The D-link Australia site only has V1.02b available so I upgraded to this.
After reformatting with Ext 2 (had no choice anyway), I was unable to map the drive to my PC.
I tried resetting the PC and the 323 a few times with no success.
My problem seemed to differ from yours and Rheims as I was always able to see my 323 with the "Easy Search utility".
But what finally worked for me was to be logged in to the 323 before starting the mapping procedure.
Hope this is of some help.
Good Luck
Jack

(I posted this to another thread but don't know how to link to it... I have it mapped from Vista Ultimate and Windows 2003 Server SP1)
It works great for me. I stuck in some drives, updated the firmware, formatted the disks in a RAID 1 setup, created one user group, created 3 users in that user group, and gave them all permission to access a directory off the root of the DNS-323 device. Something like "\\dns-323\backups". My desired use is running Vista full backups (I have Vista Ultimate and it has such full backup capability) so I wrote two on liner little batch files to mount that subdirectory as a drive or to mount other similar paths as drives:
- net use O: \\dns-323\backups /persistent:yes /user:myusername mypassword
And the other to run a full backup to the shared path on the NAS:
- wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\dns-323\backups -include:c:

Sorry guys
Another "Can't map drive" problem for you
I just got the DND323 with 2 Seagate 500bg SATA drives and went thru their internet setup and EasySearch software.
I set up the drive as Raid 1, Firmware 1.03, Easysearch 3.5.0
I have Windows XP home SP2
The internet config and Easysearch both can see my drive and make changes to it but I can't get it to map the drive using their software or the Windows "Map Network Drive" command.
Frustratingly, "My Network Places" will show an icon for the new UPnP device and when I hover over the icon it says "Device is available on your network" but when I click it, it says "This device is not available on your network". Additionally frustrating, when I goto the "Map Network Drive" in My Computer and browse, it doesn't see it.
When I type in the assigned IP address it just takes me to the internet config login
I have tried the fixes given in this forum to date and more such as
- restoring factory defaults
- checking secpol
- tried disabling DHCP and forcing an IP address
- reformatting drives after installing new firmware
- rebooting the drive after each change
- assigning multiple users with different levels of R/W access
- cursing D-Link
hiitsjack seems to have had a similar problem to mine and he said he solved the problem by logging into the 323 - how do you do that?
Firewalls are off
virus software is off
I just spent over 3 hours!!!! on the phone with D-Link "support" (I use the term skeptically) and at the end they said good luck - call us if you have any other questions. They said I should try to reinstall Windows. It seems that every company says that when they can't get their product to work but so far that has never been the problem in my experience.
Any ideas?

All,
I got the sames issued as yours for 2 months, I finally found the solution on a post somewhere here.
Check this post : http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t181-DNS32 … drive.html :

Most likely these problems is not related to DNS-323 at all. These are more likely your network/operation system/firewall problems.
In windows try to use: net use * \\your-device-ip-not-name\HDD_a /user:adminThanks a million Sala, you solved it perfectly for me (on windows), with only a little change : HDD_1 instead of HDD_a.
Which makes the correct code (replace the xx with the correct figures) :Code:
net use * \\192.168.xx.xx\HDD_1 /user:adminwhich can be entrered in a .bat file or manually whith : START / EXECUTE / CMD and then the code
Since you seems to know very much about it, would you mind explain us why the "net use * \\192.168.xx.xx\HDD_1 /user:admin" code works while the Dlink easysearch tool does not ?

My problem (which took me 2 hours to find out) was that I had disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP in the "Advanced settings"->WINS in the TCP/IP proporties of the Local Area Connection Proporties.
I enabled it, and now it works!
This one gives THE solution
