Is it possible to host a website on DNS 323?

Hi, sorry for the newb question.  I would like to make a website for hosting a possible photography business.  I have frontpage and was messing around with that last night.  I just made a quick template and hit the publish to web.  I did it to a DNS 323 folder I called "Web."  It worked and I was able to see the website on my internal network.  But, the website address was some weird thing like:  file://///DNS323xxxxxx.

Where the "xxxxx" are, that is where the folder of "Web" would be.  I just can't remember the full address right now.  Plus I deleted it all.

I am new to making a website and don't know the first thing of hosting on a ftp server.  Is this even possible with the DNS 323?  I know it has an ftp server but am not sure if this would work in the sense that I would like the outside world to see it.  How would I make it a "www" address or even a "ftp" one?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Is it possible to host a website on DNS 323?

Yes, it is possible to host a web site that is accessible to the outside world. Look on the wiki for instructions on getting "lighttpd" running.

Then you'll need to adjust your router to redirect incoming port 80 traffic to the dns-323 on whatever port you have lighttpd running on.

As for a "www" address -- you mean you want "http://www.mydomain.com" to work? You'll need to sign up with a hosting service and buy a domain name, and have it redirected to your IP address.

OK, I looked at that but I have no idea where to begin.  I have no prior Linux or programming experience other than a Visual Basic class in college.  Is this something that I would have to telnet into the box itself?

I can do this...just need to get started with the lighttpd setup first.

Yes, my friend already has a website set up and it is being hosted on Yahoo right now.  He and I have been talking about splitting the cost of the domain name and I would host it on my box.  His domain name is seperate from it being hosted on Yahoo.

I can redirect the traffic to the port and redirect the domain to the IP address.  I just need to figure out how to do this lighttpd thing.  I start reading it and my head hurts since I don't know where to begin.

Thanks for you help

Re: Is it possible to host a website on DNS 323?

I'm no expert on this, but I have friends who've run web sites from their homes before, and depending on the volume of hits you generate, your ISP might have issues with you doing that...they can get upset if you're taking a bunch of bandwidth running a commercial site on a non-commercial account.

Also, your IP address may change periodically, which I believe would render your links unusable for your customers and wouldn't look very professional.

http://dns323.kood.org/howto:lighttpd_php

First, you need to set up the fun_plug, http://dns323.kood.org/howto:fun_plug and get telnet access to the box.. It wasn't too difficult, and I have NO PRIOR linux knowledge....

I have this running on my 323 also, and I have a webpage that I can get to across the WAN...
