New DNS-323 showing purple/red on both drivers`

Hi,
I set up a DNS-323 with 2 1TB WD Green drives about a week ago. The drivers were new and I tested them using WD Diagnostic on my desktop before putting them and formatting them on the DNS-323. Everything worked fine and I copied all of my files to the share. Last night I noticed that the shared drive (i.e. server) was not available from my remote computers. Checking the device, both hard drives had a purple/red indicator where as the network indicator was blue. I was able to http to the setup to see if there are any drive failures, however the "Status" indicates Sync Time Remaining: "Completed."

In addition, I've set up email alerts in case of a failure (which I tested and it tested ok) however I recieved no notifiation email that the hard drive has failed.

When I go and restart the device, both drives show as blue. The only activity that I did last night is a scheduled backup from a remote computer on the network.

Any help is appreciated.

Kind regards!

Re: New DNS-323 showing purple/red on both drivers`

Hi,

Search this article on the forum: Pink leds: (one possible) cause and solution ( http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3726 )

I do not have a Twonky and the article above pertains to that installation. It is running 1.06 firmware and is about a week old. The reset seems to clear up the problem, however it is annoying if I have to do that.

Thus far it is indicated that its a firmware bug. Would I lose my data if I revert back to 1.05 (even though the unit came shipped with 1.06?)

Thanks!

Re: New DNS-323 showing purple/red on both drivers`

speaking of purple drive lights,

last night i reset my phpBB forum ran by my DNS321 and about 30 min later both drives went purple.  i had email alerts turned on and i got 896 emails over the next hour.

when i noticed the email msg on my g15 my jaw dropped.  i checked the box and saw the purple.  i logged into the web gui and clicked reset.  two minutes later everything was fine.  i connected through ssh and got everything running.  my mysql was a little screwy but i got it back up in a few minutes.

the forum is running fine again (it should i just reinstalled it), but the dns-321 hasnt crashed before (or after) last night.

Re: New DNS-323 showing purple/red on both drivers`

I would like to add that this is only happening when I use the remote download off another share on the driver overnight (65gig share). It does not happen unless I use the nightly "download" or backup. I am not using FunPlug yet or doing any modifications this is out of the box.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: New DNS-323 showing purple/red on both drivers`

It seems a bug in the 1.06 firmware to me. I experienced the purple led's on my CH3SNAS once, in that case the root file system was full because of a very huge log-file created by one of the installed apps. The only way to discover more is to install fun_plug and check the root file system and logs.

You are 100% correct. That's the main cause as I wrote on the other topic: "It seems that the blue leds become pink when the root filesystem is full.".

It doesn't matter if you have Twonky or not, as that is only one of the possible causes of the root filesystem becoming full, which is the real cause of the pink leds. My guess is that something in the new firmware if writing too much to the root filesystem. Either it's a log file going too large, or a new addition/changed program in the firmware that stores data in the root user's home folder (/root).

As EnricoM suggested, the best thing to do is to access the device and try to find out what's filling the root filesystem. Once inside, you can follow these instructions to find out what's using up all the space in the  root filesystem.
