DNS-321 main difference

Hey buddys, I'm really concern on buying one DNS-321... but I'm in doubt, is there any difference nowadays between DNS-321 and DNS-323? Excluding the USB port... I have googled about it, but I couldnt find much... I found on this forum some users that said that they installed transmission on this unit. Is it possible to do all hacks (DNS-323) on DNS-321?? The DNS-321 is about 40 buck cheaper.. I really need bittorrent and FFP
thanks in advance guys

Re: DNS-321 main difference

I have a DNS-321 so I can confirm that KyleK's version of Transmission works (Transmission has a file fragmentation problem, as far as I can tell which makes whatever you download transfer at 1.9 - 3.3 MB/s, but you can still BitTorrent on it just fine) or if you dare, you can chroot into debian (there's a topic around here on how do it properly on a DNS-321) and install rTorrent on the chrooted environment instead. From what I can see, whenever I download something off rTorrent the transfer speeds are normal (8-14 MB/s) and I could say that its lighter or at least it feels lighter on the unit than Transmission.

But yeah, if you don't care about the USB slot, go for it. You won't be dissapointed tongue

Right now I have installed rTorrent and irssi under the chrooted environment, and am planning to set up a ventrilo server on the future inside it too smile

Re: DNS-321 main difference

Hey Bobby what's going on?! I read one of your posts about DNS-321, thats why I decided to clearify the difference. So thanks a lot for replying my post. I think I have dicided I'll buy the DNS-321. Can u just answer me another questions?!
1- Is there any application on the wiki-323 that u couldnt be able to install on 321??
2- Do u use the DNS-321 firmware or just flashed it to become a DNS-323?
3- I'm not a guru linux user, following the steps on wiki is it easy to install the app's?

Thanks a lot for your help...

Re: DNS-321 main difference

Hi there tomrabelo,

Well, I couldn't get any optware stuff installed on my unit (hence why I chose to chroot and install stuff that way instead), but there have been reports of some people actually being able to install optware on their 321s (doesn't really do a difference to me though).

I use the latest version to date (1.01) on my unit, but also if you were to make a chroot environment, make sure to update it from 1.00 to 1.01 (otherwise it won't work, and having the jumbo frames option available is another good reason to update it).

When installing fun_plug on your 321, if you follow the same steps of the 323 (from the wiki) it should work fine (that's what I did), I also disabled telnet and enabled SSH.

I'm not a guru linux user either, but I managed just fine to install my apps after a little bit of brainstorming of my own afterwards tongue, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
