BackupPC Optimizations for DNS-323?

I've just started using BackupPC on my DNS-323, and I'm just curious what people have done to get the most performance out of them.

I've turned off any kind of compression because it was crippling the speed by 10x or more.

I'm using SMB for transport, and I'm curious if people are getting better performance from rsync or transfer method for backing up windows machines.

The best I've got so far is 1.18 MB/s with a Raid 1 array, couple of 1TB  WD caviar green drives over 100Mbit network.

I noticed that 'top' reports that backuppc calling smbclient is using 127% of memory on a really large host (2 million files, 200 gigs). Not sure if there is anything that would help that, I believe rsync may be more memory intensive?
