New Firmware 1.07b01

Hi Everyone,

My DNS-323 caused me some problems early this year (formatted the wrong drive when i added a new drive, causing me to lose years of pictures, etc) so I haven't been using it.

But I've decided to give it a second chance and want to use it to backup my computers (again) including my new 13" Macbook.  I want to know which firmware I should use.  I checked dlink and saw that they now have Firmware 1.07b01 available for download, but haven't seen any articles here about people using it.

(link like you guys need it LOL)

http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/d … e=Firmware

Here are the things I want to be able to do with my DNS-323 (with 2 Samsung HD103UJ (1TB each)) drives.

1.  Use Time Machine to backup 13" Macbook (250GB internal drive).
2.  Use Seagate Backup manager to backup important folders from 3 other windows PCs.
3.  Stream Movies, Music etc to XBOX360 over network.
4.  Use NAS as an always on FTP server accessible from the internet.
5.  Maybe stream MP3s etc over internet to iPod touch when traveling.
5.  Have an external USB drive connected to it for daily automated backups of all irreplaceable files!!!

Suggestions on firmware?  Preferences?  I saw Firmware 1.06 now supports XBOX360 streaming, should I use it instead of twonkyvison (already installed on my NAS).

Cheers!

If you're not in a rush why not wait for v1.08? It has a number of new features that you may find beneficial. See http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5485.0 for detail.

FYI: I used the information in this article http://appleclinic.wordpress.com/2008/1 … ne-on-nas/ to setup timemachine with my dns-323.

Re: New Firmware 1.07b01

Thanks for the feedback. I want to hold out until the 1.08 FW but i'm a bit impatient.  Especially since the release date is "july" which is a 31 days wink

Kikashi,  the link you have provided looks good.  However I've seen quite a bit of people (who use that method) mentioned that although the backing up of the data works, the restore does not.  This is mostly due to the fact that samba drivers are not loaded by the retail leopard disk.  Most suggest that we use Bonjour and AFP instead of samba so that the data will be accessible in the all important restore stage.  After all, what good is a backup if you can't restore from it?

Do you have any feedback? On this?

Re: New Firmware 1.07b01

I was able to to a full restore from the Leopard DVD by mounting the NAS using AFP. You're right, Apple does not provide SMB on the Leopard DVD... It requires some configuration on the NAS but I WANTED to do it and test it...

...
Re-added EXT3 Support.
...
Support Bonjour.
...
Support Apkg: new applications can be modulized and be installed to disk.
...
Add NFS Server.

Nice! Maybe no need for ffp anymore. I am currently only using it for afp via bonjour and mediatomb.
