Speed Difference Between Internal FTP and Copying and Pasting Files.
I just purchased the DNS-323 and was wondering if anyone can explain this to me. I have a gigabit ethernet network, both computer and NAS are connected at 1 gigabit. I can copy a large file 600megs from the NAS unit and paste it on my desktop and of course the response is fast. it takes around 20 seconds for the file to copy over. However when I ftp to my NAS internally it takes 2 to 3 minutes for me to get the file. When I ftp I am using the IP of the NAS 192.168.1.120. My speed starts at 7530Kbytes a second and slowly trails off to around 2300Kbytes a second. I know this is fast compared to the Internet but I was wondering why I can copy the same file and have it on my desktop in 20 seconds but over 2 minutes when I FTP internally. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

I'd assume it's because of the different protocols used for the file transfers.
From memory FTP has more error checking and more frequently (because of the "unknown" nature of the internet connection between sites) , hence higher overheads than a normal file copy.

Side issue that I noticed... FTP "upload" also changes the file's date and time. If keeping the original date/time for each file is important, use the drive mapping (local copy) method. New subdirectories (names) will have the new date/time but the files inside these subdirectories will have the original date/time.
