Upgrade firmware lose data?

I purchased my Dlink 323 Nas storage about 1 year ago and haven't check this forum in a while.  I've noticed that there are new firmwares for my NAS.  If I upgrade the firmware will I loose all my data?  I can not back up my data because I don't have another hard drive big enough to hold all my data.

Also, what is the latest firmware version? 1.07? 1.08 beta?

Re: Upgrade firmware lose data?

The first thing I want to make clear is this - without a back up your data is at risk - whether you are upgrading the firmware of just using the NAS.

Having said that - some firmware upgrades require a reformat of the disks, so depending on which revision you are at and which revision you are upgrading to, you may be placing your data at greater risk - read the firmware release notes, not just for the revision you are going to, but all those between the one you are at, and the one you plan on upgrading to.

And finally - assuming a disk reformat is not required, you can expect to upgrade the firmware without losing your data - BUT - there is no guarantee, it's really up to you - so in the words of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry - Do you feel lucky - punk?
