Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

I finally received my DNS-323 unit a few days ago, and got the drives (2x500GB Western Digital WD5000YS RE drives) last night. Today I put it all together and plugged it in. The little blue light flashed for a bit, then settled to a solid blue. The drive lights are blue as well.
After spending a while on my OS X machine without finding the IP address, I jumped onto my wife's Windows machine and ran the easy-search utility. Nothing came up. I downloaded the latest version of that utility (3.5), ran it and nothing's appearing.
I've tried connecting through the web interface by using the default IP address 192.160.0.32, to no avail.
The drive lights are on, as is the network light, but I can't see it from the computer. I've tried a different ethernet cable, and unplugging it gives the "network cable unplugged" Windows message. Even the network properties window shows nothing (well, limited to no connectivity is reported, but no IP).
The D-Link manual doesn't mention what to do if the easy-search application finds nothing, and their website is... unhelpful.
Is there anything I can try, or is the unit dead on arrival?

I donīt think it is dead...
Do you have a DCHP-Server running on your network? If yes, the DHCP-Server will assign a IP-Adress from your lokal adress range to your DNS thatīs different to the DNSīses default IP, but the Easy-Search-Utility will be able to find the box.
If you donīt have a DHCP-Server on your network, then the DNS will probably be in a different IP-subnet by default and neither your PC, Mac nor Easy Search will be able to find the box.
Two ways to solve the problem:
1.) Enable a DHCP-Server on your network (i.e. on your router if you have one) and restart the DNS. Easy-Search should then be able to find the box and give you the IP-Adress that has been assigned to it.
2.) Change your PCīs IP-Adress to any adress in the same subnet as the DNSīses default IP, connect to the DNS, change IP-adresses on DNS and PC and then you shpuld have it available in your local network

Have you set an IP address on your network interface on the same lan of the DNS-323 (ie. 192.168.0.10) ?
Are you using a cross cable ? (check the two RJ-45 connector: the 8 wires should be connected on different pins)
Bye.

its in the manual that if you do not use DHCP you need to do some extra actions.

Okay, embarassing rookie mistake... Not being familiar with a lot of networking, I thought I could set it up locally connected to my computer and then put the drive on the network. I couldn't see the drive before because I was directly connected to it, not via the network.
