Podcast downloader

Anyone have a hack on how to use the DNS to autodownload podcasts - like juice or other tool checks sites on a schedule.
Without a full blown debian hack. wink

Cheers

Re: Podcast downloader

I've been hoping that a NAS file server would someday have capabilities of automatically downloading podcasts that you specify.  Reason being, I don't want to leave my computer on just to grab the podcasts.  I would love for the DNS-323 to be able to have the capability of automatically checking for updated podcasts and downloading them.  And with a Roku SoundBridge M1000 hooked up to my stereo, it would be wonderful to use that to access the automatically downloaded podcasts on the DNS-323, again without having to leave my computer on to do the downloading of the podcasts.

I hope someone does add this option to the DNS-323.

Re: Podcast downloader

Just curiuos, probably a dumb question, is there a reason why the Download Scheduler built into the DNS-323 wouldn't work?

Re: Podcast downloader

The Download Scheduler option in the DNS-323 firmware allows you to specify specific links to download.  As it relates to podcasts, if you want to use that option to automatically download podcasts, you would need to know, in advance, the path and filename of every individual podcast file to be downloaded, then one by one include them as scheduled downloads (knowing when those files will be available to download).  It doesn't operate like a podcast download app where you specify a RSS link and it downloads the files referred to in the RSS link.  Also, it has a limit of 128 characters in the specified download links.

If you download certain podcasts that have a set schedule of when files are available with a standardized filename format for each file, you could individually schedule each download in the DNS-323 firmware's Download Scheduler.  However, when it comes to podcasts that use varied styles of filenames and inconsistent dates of when the files are available to download, the Download Scheduler isn't going to be of any help.

This is exactly why a podcast download app on the DNS-323, with options to specify RSS links of podcasts and schedules of when to download updated available podcasts, would be a wonderful feature.
