Incremental backup with rsync. How does it work?

Hi guys, I have enabled incremental backups on a daily basis as described by http://dns323.kood.org/howto:backup.  It seems to be working well.  I just want to know how it works.  It seems to have multiple copies of the files, without taking up the space of multiple versions.  How is this working?  I assume that the latest backup is complete, and if my primary hard drives fails, I can copy the latest backup to the new primary drive?

Thanks in advance

By using so-called "hard links". See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_link and http://rsync.samba.org/ftp/rsync/rsync.html (look for --link-dest)
