Solution: Automatic power on using a single capacitor (dead simple)

There are many solutions to automatically power on your DNS-323.  However, all required ordering chips from Digikey, and solder a bunch of chips, resistors, capacitors, diodes and/or transistors.

However, my soldering skills are average and I know it takes even more skills (and knowledge) to make a small and reliable assembly.  In addition, I'm lazy and I'd rather solder a single capacitor.

The details can be found here: http://dns323.kood.org/hardware:autopow … 1_hardware

Please confirm it works for you as well; it worked for my two DNS-323.

Nice, would it work on a CH3SNAS as well?

I had tried that capacitor trick on the older revision (refer to the same article) and it did not work.

Re: Solution: Automatic power on using a single capacitor (dead simple)

Agreed that it shouldn't work on older version since (from what I have been able to gather) these are looking for a low impedance 12V.

Fortunately, rev B1 is looking for a high impedance active low input... smile

I am not familiar with the CH3NAS.  However, if the power switch drives a ground signal, it shouldn't hurt trying (make sure your capacitor voltage rating is large enough for the voltage of the pull up).  Let us know of the outcome.

Not sure this is the right thread...  You may want to ask the question in it's own thread.

DNS-323 firmware B1 and restart after power failure feature
Would it be possible for D-Link to add this feature to the next firmware version.

As far as I'm aware this is not as simple as a firmware update - as you have noticed that the remainder of the thread discusses hardware modifications.

However - I believe the feature has been implemented on later hardware versions - possibly the Rev. C - if you check the firmware version notes on DLink's support page, you'll be able to verify this.

Without the diode, the solution doesn't power back up the DNS for short AC glitches (3-4 seconds).  I haven't tested with the diode, but got a comment that it was working with small glitches (less than a second).
