External USB storage : permission issue

Hi all,

I just get a DNS 323 device.
I try to connect an HD on USB port.
It's working, I can access by telnet and samba.
But, I can create a folder on the USB HD.
When I execute mkdir command, the command is blocked and never return.
I think it's a permission issue.

Have you got an idea about this issue.
many thanks in advance for your help

Re: External USB storage : permission issue

As root, no permissions would halt any command. Could be the drive is being mounted as read-only (even mkdir should inform you). Have you tried with touch?

Post your /etc/mtab to see the readonly issue

Re: External USB storage : permission issue

I try different ways
1°) mount DD with FAT32 format. When I perform mkdir, the command never returns. the mount is in RW state
2°) mount DD with NTFS format. the mount is in RO state. I see that it's necessary to use ntfs-3g driver. But I don't know if it's available somewhere.
3°) mount USB key with FAT32 format. When I perform mkdir, the command is successful.

I think I have to format my first DD in FAT32 on linux.
I would like to know if ntfs-3g exists for DNS323.
The USB key is OK

Many thanks in advance for your support

Re: External USB storage : permission issue

I believe the ntfs.ko wasn´t reliable on writings. Is the hard disk a 2,5" one? could be a power outage? Im not sure if you could found any error-related line at /var/log/messages

Re: External USB storage : permission issue

I confirm that ntfs.ko doesn't manage writing feature.
The HD is 2.5'' one.
I will see if I can put a power outage.
But I think it's more a SW issue that an HW issue.

I will test and come back.

thanks

Re: External USB storage : permission issue

Old thread, yes, sorry.  But...

A year later, has ntfs-3g become available for DNS-323?  Or any other method of NTFS RW access?

Re: External USB storage : permission issue

How 'bout any large-file capability on the USB drive (ext2, ext3)?
