Backup Software

Hi there. I just got one of these and I was wondering what backup software that members would recommend for someone who needs to back up 2 computers and maybe even do a bare metal restore as well? I was using a copy of Retrospect and the issue is that it sometimes can't find the DNS-323.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Re: Backup Software

I've been using Acronis TrueImage, it has worked well, and I've had no problems with bare metal restore, although I have only done that once during my initial evaluation of the product.  I'm currently looking at Retrospect, and although it's a little early, I have a feeling I'll be staying with Acronis.

Re: Backup Software

I've looked at retrospect as well, fordem, and stayed with Acronis...liked the Acronis UI better, and have done several bare-metal restores w/Acronis and never had a problem....

Re: Backup Software

Acronis is great stuff.  Been using it for a couple of years primarily to back up my O/S partition.   For data backup I make redundant copies of important stuff and use a Sync program to update the back-up.   Currently using Vice Versa.  Synchromagic is another good one.

Re: Backup Software

Yeah, houndog, I do the same.  Acronis for system partition (Csmile and then I use a program called Second Copy to do data file backups on other drives/partitions...from DNS-323 to hard drives in external USB enclosures...keep one drive at home, one goes to work, and swap every week or so (in theory...I sometimes forget to swap for a month or more).

I'm paranoid, but I just don't want to see that look on my wife's eyes if I had to tell her all our baby pictures had been lost in a fire/theft...

I'll take a look at Vice Versa and Synchromagic.  Second Copy works well, has a bunch of copy/sync options, and is easy to use.

Re: Backup Software

Second Copy is an excellent program.  I forget if it would delete files in the Target drive that you remove from the Source drive.

Synchromagic and vice versa delete, update, add, etc.  Synchromagic is easier to use and ViceVersa sometimes confuses me with all the options it contains.

Re: Backup Software

Yup...Second Copy does have a "sync" option which will sync deletes as well as files if you want it to.   Thanks for the info!

Re: Backup Software

Thanks for the feedback. Just so I am clear on this, You can make a boot disk with Acronis (I was thinking of the using the Home version if that helps) and when you use it, you can see the DNS-323. Right?

Re: Backup Software

Using Acronis I have been able to boot two different laptops, connect to my DNS-323 and restore a previously made image.  It may or may not work for you depending on the ethernet and disk controller hardware in your PC - I think it allows for you to add drivers to the boot CD, but I'm not certain.

The good news is they do have an evaluation version so you can try before you buy.

Re: Backup Software

Thanks. I downloaded a copy and installed it. I also created a restore CD and confirmed that both my computers would see the NAS box. Very nice program and miles above Retrospect. I'll be buying it on the net shortly.

Re: Backup Software

I was using Retrospect, but the version I have doesn't like my DNS 323. That's why I'm shopping around for something else.

SuperDuper is probably the best backup software for the Mac, but the main requirement is an external hard drive formatted in HFS+.

I'm experimenting with a combination of Unison and something like rdiff-backup to keep a number of computers in sync with some file version history as well.

I'll post something in the Wiki when I make some progress, but I have nothing but the concept to share at the moment.

Maybe someone could suggest some Mac backup software that can be used with network shares.
