RAID 1 with different sized HDDs?

Hi everyone,

I've been running a RAID 1 array with 2 x 500gb HDDs. Recently one of the HDDs failed (thank goodness for RAID 1), and I've decided to replace both of the drives with new 1 TB HDDs.

Can anyone tell me how to do this efficiently as possible?

If I simply replace the faulty 500gb HDD with the 1 TB drive, will the DNS sync the contents of the good 500gb HDD to the 1 TB drive? If yes, can I then simply replace the good 500gb HDD with the other 1 TB drive so that the DNS syncs the contents of the first 1 TB drive to the second? Finally, if yes, will I be able to use all 1 TB or will doing this restrict me to 500gb?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks :-)

the easiest thing (and safest) would be to pull the old drives out and connect the working one via usb.

Re: RAID 1 with different sized HDDs?

No it won't - and what will happen MAY depend on the firmware version you are running.

Older firmware versions - when you replace the defective drive the unit will recreate the RAID1 array exactly as it was before, and you will lose the remaining 500GB of space, and when you add the second 1TB drive, you'll get exactly the same thing happening, so you end up with a 500GB RAID1 array and two 500GB sets of storage space that you have no access to.

Newer firmware versions - MAY - do it differently - I have not actually tested this, but I think that the unit will now create a JBOD volume from the space left unused after the RAID volume was created, in which case you'll get a 500GB RAID1 volume and possibly either another 500GB of JBOD storage or 1TB of JBOD storage.

I believe this is either in or was planned for the 1.08 firmware which is still in beta.
