I've been looking all over but I can't seem to find a proper guide to help me install Samba or SWAT on my DNS-323. I'm using funplug 0.5 on my D-LINK DNS-323, can somebody help me out? I'm very new to linux with minimal experience, but I really want to learn more.

The device comes with Samba; that's how it shares files on your network.
You might look at

Aside from messing around with the installed Samba as described in this link, the next step would be to bootstrap debian and work with its samba/swat.
