Hi,
my chroot etch with afp and atalkd had been running fine, then suddenly there was a totally non-responsive crash. No SSH, telnet, ping, web.
After a hard powerdown and restart my appleshares aren't mountable in OSX.
atalkd refuses to operate with the following errors:
>socket: Address family not supported by protocol
>socket: Address family not supported by protocol
>atalkd: can't get interfaces, exiting.
Which implies that appletalk isn't supported by the kernel.
afpd seems to be working, when I afp://user:pass@192.168.1.3/ in OSX I get a correct list of mountable volumes, but then receive a spinner logo and nothing until a failure.
tail /var/log/syslog shows:
May 31 16:17:36 dlink-ECE353 afpd[3912]: uam: "No User Authent" available

when I kill the afpd process I get

Anyone got any ideas on how to restore the function of my netatalk installation?
thanks.

Any help on installing a kernel module for appletalk?

More and more interesting.
setting up in AppleVolumes.config "root" / as a share allowed mounting.
Attempting to copy a file into a directory under /home/foo resulted in failure due to permissions.
Working this over with changed permissions through the "root" share on / through macintosh to "User: rw" "Group: rw" "Other: r" allowed writing.
In chroot debian (etch) this was equivalent to: drwxrwsr-x on the directory and -rw-rw-r-- on files.
After repairing permissions, I deleted :2eDS_Store, ".AppleDesktop" and its contents and ".AppleDouble" and its contents.
Mounting then succeeded.
Anyone want to give me the goss of why this was the problem?
many thanks.
