New firmware release 1.04 is coming soon!

After more than a week talking back and forth with the tech support, DLink finally confirmed that there's indeed a problem transferring files with non-english characters as the file name.  This is supposed to be fixed in firmware release 1.04.

"Soon!"   When the sw engineers I know say "soon" it can mean anything from next week to six months from now....    wink

That's very true, but at least they have confirmed it as a known bug and try to fix it.  This will help others to stop wondering why the feature is not working, etc.

Re: New firmware release 1.04 is coming soon!

Actually I'm expecting a new firmware release within the next 5-10 days.  If you look at the release dates for the firmware on the US support site, they have release new firmware on a two month cycle, with the last update being in early April - if this pattern holds, the next update is due within the next few days.

Of course this is just my observation wink

Think they'll have a USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 upgrade in it?  wink

I was going to tell you that I didn't think so, as it might be more of a hardware upgrade than a software upgrade - BUT - the wiki claims that the USB hardware is USB 2.0 so it might be just a matter of enabling it.

In a Windows world that would be a matter of locating and installing the right drivers - so time for you to get cracking.

I sure hope they will fix the power management problem ('spin down' problem). It's really annoying that the disks don't 'go to sleep' and even more frustrating that it has not been fixed for months.

What "spin down" problem - my disks spin down just fine.

Maybe you should take a look at the wiki or search the forum - there are known reasons why the disks don't spin down under certain circumstances, and very simple fixes.

Yeah...I wasn't sure how much stock to put in that, but if it's in the wiki, it must be true, right?!  smile  One can only hope...I'd love to be able to hang drives off the DNS-323 w/decent transfer speed, then I'd hang pretty much all my USB drives off the DNS-323 so I'd have internal/external access to all of them...

Re: New firmware release 1.04 is coming soon!

If I upgrade the firmware, do I have to reformat the hard drives and will I therefore lose all files?

only if they are formatted EXT3 - EXT2 does not make you reformat....

I didn't want to take this thread furter off topic, so I'm updating your other thread on USB 2.0

Thanks,
I've done that.
The most 'common' solution involves cleaning the print spooler directory. This actually doesn't work for me because I do use the print server but anyway I tried it just to see if this was the reason and still couldn't fix the problem.
I haven't seen any other 'real' solutions unless I missed something.
I've been in touch with dlink support - so far they have been quite dissapointing.

Just for the heck of it -try disconnecting the printer, clearing the spool folder and wait 20 minutes without sending any print jobs - if it still doesn't spin down, then there is more than one cause for that symptom.

Re: New firmware release 1.04 is coming soon!

From dlink.com:
Firmware ver.                 release date
1.0                                8/9/2006
1.01b                            10/24/2006
1.01                              12/18/2006
1.02b                            2/6/2007
1.03                              4/5/2007

and 1.04b21 was available since 6/15/2007 as we've seen from keule's post.
It seems D-Link is updating the firmware based on a 2-month period. smile
