Any issues backing up another NAS to a DNS-323

Hi,

I am upgradding my home NAS to a ReadyNAS and want to use my DNS-323 as a backup target for this NAS.  The ReadyNAS software supports both nfs and rsync.  Has anyone every tried this before?  Are there any issues?

Thanks,

Jerry

If you figure it out, I'd like to hear the solution.  I have a Synology DS209 that I'd like to automatically backup to a DNS-323, I'd love to automate this without doing it from my computer.

Have either of you tried the DNS-323's built-in backup application?

I frankly didn't realize the DNS-323 had a built-in backup application.

Anyone use it?  Comments?

Re: Any issues backing up another NAS to a DNS-323

I'd suggest a search, not only here, but also over at forums.dlink.com - I have seen many complaints about it, that all seem to relate to two areas, the first being that incremental backups fail, and the second related to authentication failure with scheduled backups.

Personally I have just started using it and so far so good - the stored credentials allowed a connection to the server, and given the perhaps typical "sloth" with which these units are known to operate, the first backup run completed in a surprisingly short time - a quick rummage through the folders shows the expected contents, and during the course of today I will do a more through check to ensure that everything was backed up.

With regard the complaints about incremental backup failing - I noted in the setup screen than the incremental backup is for local backup only, (which would be DNS-323 to DNS-323 - presumably one disk to the other), and the last complaint I looked at, the user was attempting to use it to backup his PC, so that's a PEBCK type error, and I would not be surprised to discover that the authentication failures have a similar cause.

Will it work for me - or - will I join the band of disillusioned owners?  Only time will till, but so far I'm a happy camper.

Well, the lack of incremental backup capability is pretty much a deal-killer for me.  I don't want to backup the whole dataset every time.
