autostart services

I am running chroot debian upgraded to lenny. All works fine, except that none of the services start that I configured to start in specific run levels.  I used sysvconfig to ensure that the start is set and even run update-rc.d.
However, when the system comes back up, none of my services are started. Even who -r does return nothing. Never used a chroot system before. Could that be the reason for the autostart behavior and if yes, who can I get those services to start?
Any help appreciated!
