Hello everybody... I'm following the wiki to get my DNS-323 working with Time Machine. I successfully managed to do every step but now I'm blocked and hope to get some good tips here on this forum. This is where I'm blocked:
#
The optware startup script specified on the optware how-to page works, you just need to comment out the lines that echo details to the log. They really serve no purpose. If you want them, just specify the LOGFILE variable at the top of the script. You can't skip this step… it ties /opt to your ipkg opt directory.
Where is this ?... where I can find this file ? and what do I have to comment out exactly ?
#
Be sure to add the path directive from the script to the /ffp/etc/profile file, since we installed FFP 0.5. If you don't, you'll have to manually locate “ipkg” as well as all of the other binaries that you install under /mnt/HD_a2/opt/.
I tried this, but when I try to save the profile file, my mac says I don't have suffecient privileges to save this file ? Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance for all your help on these probably stupid questions....

Why don't you use only ffp packages?
All you need is db42 and netatalk. Look at http://dns323.kood.org/howto:appletalk
If you need autodiscovery, use avahi as explain here: http://dns323.kood.org/howto:mac_osx_users.
Forget optware for this, it is not worth it...

Totally agree with mushanga... skip the optware based install.
You can reference the db42/netatalk info on the wiki, but also checkout this post: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5735
By installing the new version of netatalk, Time Machine can automatically create the sparsebundle needed by the Time Machine process. Note that you still need to install avahi.

+2 wrt Mushanga's & TheBeck's comments. Follow their advise. I did what they are advising you when I got my 323 early in 2009 and have been successfully using TM to backup my wired desktops to the 323 w/o issues. However, I've never had to use the backups so it may backup fine but the restore may not. I think I'll try a restore with a spare empty disk when I get a moment.

Just a question on the time machine auto sparse creation. How is the size of the sparse file specified.
I have used the old method with creating a file in the size required etc.
I'm also currently using the dlink bonjor plug in. Works ok execpt I find it needs restarting to be discovered after I boot up.

I am using the DNS-323 to back up two Macbooks using Time Machine. I followed the directions at this web site: http://www.horto.ca/?p=12 Worked like a charm!

Hi There, I too have my DNS-323 acting as my Time Machine backup and it works great thanks to this forum! My next question is that it only works when I am at home on my local network. Is there some way I could now Map this network drive to do Backups wherever I am on the internet? Is there a port on my router I can forward through?
Would this be a wise thing to do if it's possible?
Thanks Guys
