Re: Alt-F-0.1B5 has been released

Hi all,

I am a complete noob and a 100% Linux dummy, trying to administer my DNS-323 from my Win7 64bit machine. Please help :-)

I tried running alt-f over the 1.08 firmware of my DNS-323, but it did not really work for me, so I want to uninstall it. Which actually worked, only thing remaining is the alt-f and the Users directories created in the root of my Volume_1. I cannot delete them, it tells me that I need permisison from the root unix user.

Can somebody tell me how to get rid of those directories? I suspect I would have to telnet in or something along those lines, but that is just way over my head.

Thanks in advance!

I'm afraid you are right. I have already added it to my TODO2 list.

The problem is that those files and directories are owned by "root", the linux system administrator.

Have you tried to remove them using ftp?

If that does not work, then you have to install ffp, which is as easy as install as Alt-F -- you have a wiki entry on how to do it. After that you have to telnet the box and remove the files and directories.

If I might ask, what did you not like in Alt-F?

Joao

Tried to run over current firmware but no luck. alt-f-reloaded.log says "reloaded-2.6.22.7.ko not found, exiting".

Are you on a rev-C1 hardware board, aren't you?
The C1 board only has three speeds, off, low, medium, high; the indicated RPM values are fakes, as there is no way to read the actual fan speed; 400RPM should be low speed.

I don't have one C1 board, so I have worked according to users feedback.

Have you read the help page? Click the (C) icon next to the page title, read it, use your hears to guess the fan speed (off, low, medium and high), and post back your findings.

Thanks.

Tried to run over current firmware but no luck. alt-f-reloaded.log says "reloaded-2.6.22.7.ko not found, exiting".

So the CH3MNAS uses a 2.6.22 kernel. Do you know if there is a ffp for it?
The missing "reloaded-2.6.22.7" modules came from fonz ffp work, and are needed to launch Alt-F.

But there are many hardware details that one need to know before doing a serious attempt. What processor does the box has? The amount of flash? How is it partitioned? What peripherals (leds, buttons, fan, etc) does the unity have? Is it supported by linux?

Thanks for trying,
Joao

Some people say CH3MNAS it's successor and replacer for the CH3SNAS. Its CPU: Marvell Orion 88F5182. According to this thread http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=30172 it has 128mb ram. Partitions i've seen so far are the same than ch3snas. 6 leds, 2 buttons. Its last firmware sources version (GPL): http://download.conceptronic.net/GNU-GPL/CH3MNAS/. There is a 1.02b2 firmware, but no sources.
Some time ago I tried DNS-323 ffp into CH3MNAS. I was able to telnet it, but didn't spend more time on it. After overwritting fun_plug for trying your firm, no more telnet available. There is a usb-storage.ko.zip for CH3MNAS released www.aroundmyroom.com (forum member?)

I don't like official firmware so I would like to try official dns 323 instead or even better, yours.
Thanks & regards

The SoC is supported by the kernel, but not the box itself. Having the kernel source for the unity will help, so it's possible.

Having fun_plug support is a big step forward, which allows us to know the flash partition structure, but the hard task is generally to find how the leds, buttons, fan, temperature sensor, etc are setup so one can use/write support for them. The box kernel sources can give some hints on this, depends on how much it has been modified.

The first task is to compile fonz reloaded modules for the box running kernel, which seems to be 2.6.22. I remember trying to compile them for 2.6.25/28 (?) but it failed.
If by hazard kexec support is built in the box kernel, then the reloaded modules would not be necessary, but I'm not sure when did kexec appears on arm, and I doubt that it is compiled-in.

Anyway, it is not a task to accomplish remotely, it has to be hands-on.

Joao

So you have not followed the installation instructions :-)

Re: Alt-F-0.1B5 has been released

hei jcard,

fan issue on rev c1 has been reported by Augusto Bott

Code:

http://code.google.com/p/alt-f/issues/detail?id=23

currently i'm using Alternative #1 and it works.

add the following lines to /etc/sysctrl.conf
lo_fan="400"
hi_fan="2000"
max_fan_speed="2000"

Code:

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/9646/altf.png

Thank both of you. and have a nice weekend :-)
