"Brick"ing my DNS-323 by adding telnet / USB storage

Am I right in thinking that if I "brick" my DNS-323 by doing something silly whilst trying to get telnet and USB storage working, that the data will still be intact? That is, the DNS-323 will be broken forevermore, but I can still take the drive out, put it in another caddy and then access it without any problems? I'd obviously be gutted if the DNS-323 went kaput, but losing data scares me even more. Cheers!

I think you'd have to do some seriously strange things to brick your DNS-323 by adding telnet and USB storage, but I suppose it might be possible...

BTW - Your data needs to be backed up, no matter what you do or don't do w/the DNS!

Yeah, I figured as much, but the warnings on the Wiki have put the fear of God into me!  smile

I do already have multiple backups of my data, it would just be a pain to get to them if the DNS-323 did go down (offsite, multiple DVDs, etc etc).

Re: "Brick"ing my DNS-323 by adding telnet / USB storage

Like DNS-323 talker says - your data needs to be backed up.

If your DNS-323 were to fail during normal operation, there's a good chance that you could pull the drives and either install them in a second DNS-323 and retrieve the data, or connect it to a computer running linux or one of the installable linux file system drivers for Windows and get your data back - IF you are using the disks in a RAID1 configuration or as separate disks.  If you are running RAID0 or JBOD, retrieving the data is theoretically possible, but may not be as straight forward.

If using telnet, you were to enter an "ill advised" command, you could possibly (a) brick the DNS-323 and/or (b) format the disks - so you do need to proceed with some degree of caution.

Having said that - the instructions in the wiki for adding telnet and USB storage are fairly straight forward, and should not get you into trouble - even if you make a few typos here and there.  I'd say back up the data, and have some fun - read a little about linux, make sure you have a basic idea of what the command you're about to enter does, and if you're going to edit or delete a file - pause long enough to make sure it's the right file.

Re: "Brick"ing my DNS-323 by adding telnet / USB storage

HOLD EVERYTHING - the bloody thing seems to have cocked up entirely of it's own accord. So it would appear all it takes is for me to *think* about installing telnet on there! Guess I'm about to see about pulling it into a caddy then...

Edit: The drive's shafted - the DNS-323 won't even allow me to get to the web interface, and if I stick it in a USB caddy then the drive doesn't even spin up. That's the second Seagate that's gone belly up within two weeks. Both were working fine before I put them in the DNS-323, which now leads to the mind games of "Is it the drives, or is the DNS-323 that's at fault?" sad

Re: "Brick"ing my DNS-323 by adding telnet / USB storage

Seeing as I've had mine close to six months and it pretty much runs 24/7 and has been generally fooled around with - hot plugging drives, putting in known defective drives, etc. (trying to get a drive failure indication) and it's stood up to it, I'm inclined to say it's not the DNS-323 - oh - I frogot to mention, the drives in it weren't new ones either - one's an 80 GB Maxtor been around since 2005 and the other's a 250 GB Seagate I've had since mid 2006.

Re: "Brick"ing my DNS-323 by adding telnet / USB storage

As my sig notes, I've got a pair of Seagate 500's in mine, running almost 24/7 since purchased weeks ago, turned off a few times, restarted any number of times, no problems.  So I'd say the DNS-323 in general is not a drive killer, but there's always a possibility you have a bad unit.  If it isn't too much trouble you could look into exchanging your DNS-323 for a new one...having two drives fail in quick succession is a bit odd.
