Hi, I'm thinking of buying DNS-323, I've got lots of questions about it, I was wondering if you guys would be able to help me out.
1. Does it automatically rebuild RAID(1) if your drive fails? I've read that it didn't, and you had to move the data elsewhere and basically rebuild the whole RAID1 from scratch, instead of just inserting a replacement drive.
2. Is it secure? I mean from crackers/hackers?
3. Is it stable? does it crash often?
4. How is the fan noise? is it loud? can you hear it over an average computer?
5. Are firmware updates frequent?
Thank you!

1. Yes...Fordem has done this w/RAID1 and verified it
2. Should be as secure as any other drive on your home network in stock form
3. Never had a crash or freeze or any stability issue in, what, about six or more weeks, 24/7 use
4. A non-issue in my home...room has two other computers, but I've never noticed the fan unless I've got my head right near the unit
5. Been coming very two months or so.

2. Security... Considering that the default config has no security on a share I would strongly recommend to never put this device directly on to Internet. However for SOHO usage it is good enough.
4. The good thing about being a NAS device is that it can be located where noise is a non issue. I.e closet or similar place. Even so the noise is moderate except under heavy usage.

Thanks for the answers guys!

1) The RAID1 rebuild is not fully automatic - the process goes like this.
Remove the failed drive and insert the replacement, log in to the web interface - you will get a prompt telling you that the new drive needs to be formatted, to which you must respond. The drive will then be formatted, after which the rebuild is done - I vaguely remember one or more reboots in the process.
The only reason I'm describing the process as not fully automatic is that it does require that you log in to the web interface and respond to a prompt - there is no need to remove and restore data.
Having said, that I'd now like to point out that mirrored disks are not a substitute for backup.
2) Is it secure - within reason - yes - as secure as anything else using CIFS/SMB and ftp protocols - in other words it is only as secure as you make it.
3) I've had absolutely no stability issues with mine in the six months I've had it - other persons have have reported problems apparently due to a bug in the daylight saving algorithms, which I don't use, because of where I live.
4) I'm inclined to ask what noise - although to be honest I can hear mine startup, or shutdown - it lives on a shelf in my rack alongside my router and whatever noise it makes can be considered unobtrusive, it's certainly less audible than, for example, my laser and ink-jet printers.
5) Firmware updates are reasonably frequent - to date two months apart - however I would expect that frequency to drop as whatever bugs that do exist are worked out. Apparently new features are also being added, I understand the 1.04 beta includes a torrent client
