using the USB port as a print server from linux

Soory if this is not the right place but after submitting this question to serveral forums included DLINK Tech Service without getting an answer i have no place to turn.....so here goes

I have a 323 with 2 1tb Seagates....using windowsx everything including the printer server work...(no shareport needed for the printer)

However, when using linux, i can only get the two drives working but not the printer server.

I do not wish to make any mods to the 323 to get the server working.....Is this possible and what is the configuration to be used from CUPS...
I do not use a GDI printer.  No problem printing from Linux when the printer is attached to usb on the desktop.

Any ideas.....i may entertain mods for the 323 if they are not overly complicated...

Re: using the USB port as a print server from linux

I'm using a GDI printer (HP LaserJet 1000w) and it's working either under windows or linux. Of course I made some changes to be able to use this dumb printer but I have no problem using it under linux. I've set it up as a simple network printer, nothing special. Do you have any error message about permission or something? Be sure which one you need: CUPS or HPLIP?

My second printer on the DNS-323 is a Canon ip4600. I haven't used it yet under Linux but I will try to just for a test. If I know something new "I'll be back"... smile

Re: using the USB port as a print server from linux

this is setup I used....

Driver:    Canon i560 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 (color, 2-sided printing)
Connection:    smb://LINUXWORKGROUP/DLINK-725771/lp

Ofcourse this was all done using CUPS in debiam sid on my desktop...

Let me know how you make out.....btw LINUXWORKGOUP is my workgroup and DLINK-72557 is the server...However your server should be whatever you named it in the original configuration of the 323...and yes  ,,,it works even thought the dlink tech said the server only works on windows...
