hi there,
i have troubles with installing Debnas after formating DNS-323.
Ive made factory reset of NAS and formated disk. Inside there is only one disk 750GB. Ive tried to do evrything exactly as in Mark Stahler tutorial ( http://blog.markstahler.ca/2010/01/the- … tallation/ ).
Steps which i do to install:
1. Disk formating (ext3)
2. Puting linux.tar and the fun_plug file on disk by windows access
3. Shutting down NAS
4. Starting NAS
5. Waitng about 10-15 minutes.
6. On NAS there are: fun_plug, linux.tar (89,3MB) and linux (folder, 95,8MB)
7. Trying to log by SSH(22) - can not connect
8. Trying to log by Telnet - can not connect
9. Checking ports witch are opened on DNS-323 and there are opened only: 80, 139, 445, 515
Please tell me what should i do ? Or wht should i do to run Debian on my NAS.

Currently you can do one of three things:
You can flash debian natively (something that's supposed to be dangerous without a serial console), however it also is the best working option since things like disk sleep works better.
Manually build a debian reloaded install using the instructions on these forums.
Run a debian chroot environment. Of which there are several, I have alt-f debian chroot packages on my experimental alt-f feed as well as some other packages such as sabnzbdplus that run under the chroot.
However, if you can wait a little while several people are working on various methods to get debian running using the reloaded module. I know Joao has indicated in the alt-f groups he'd have a method for alt-f to transition to debian in the next version. I have debian running reloaded myself and have been doing work on packaging it up to make installing easier (I'm working on more advanced functionality like web interfaces for debian and common web managed packages, lun storage using iscsi/aoe, data replication using drbd and hopefully high availability clustering although that's more of a long term goal). Also Puterboy has indicated he had debian running reloaded along with some information on how he got it working, although I don't know if he has any plans on releasing anything.

i'm a noobie in linux enivironment and i dont know how to install debian natively + i dont have serial console access so if someone could tell me (or give a link) to instructions to any debian reloaded version wich i could run on my nas.
I dont know how to compile debian for my dns-323. as far as i know alt-f is a custom firmware for dns-323 and its beta for now. I would like to wait for a while till it will be a final realese. So is there any possibility to install normal reloaded module ??
If someone know why i cant do it (as i done it before, about 1 yr ago) please tell me.
PS. debnas is a etch version, everyone write about upgradeing to lenny version (but i found info about that lenny version on dns-323 is slower then etch) is that true ?? or maybe its better to upgrade to squeeze or wheezy version ??

Alt-F can either be flashed over the native dlink firmware or it can be run via the reloaded kernel module.
I test my debian package (which is based on the latest debian squeeze) for it using the reloaded version of alt-f I've personally never flashed it.

Last is debian wheezy wich is debian 7.0 squeeze is debian 6.0.
So as i understand i can flash to alt-f by reloaded module and then run debian reloaded module on it, yes ?? any links to newest reloaded modules ??

You can use alt-f reloaded and run squeeze in a chroot (you need a newer kernel like alt-f provides to run the newer debian versions, even in chroot environment).
It is possible to use the reloaded module but that is currently a manual process.

could u send me any instractions (or any links) how to run squeeze on my dns-323 ??
im just a beginner in this. maybe u know why i cant install debian on my nas couse i done that before. any ideas ?? is becuse of hdd sleeping ?? (i can turn it off in http firmware gui)

PROBLEM SOLVED BY ME.
For people who have same problem.
U need to format disk in ext3 (stable one) not in the ext2 (performance one) couse is wont work. Second is to turn of HHD hibernation by WWW gui then export by windows or by ftp client (first u need to turn on ftp server on dns, ie. with access for anyomous) files: fun_plug, linux.tar to Volume_1 then turn of upnp server, ftp server, itunes server. After that TURN OFF the dns-323 and then start it, after about 10 minutes u can access by ssh.

Another option, that I recently got working:
1. Set up your disk using the dlink web interface (if you plan on using LVM/Ext4/btffs/drbd/iscsi/AoE make the main volume something like 30-50GB so the rest of the disk is available for the other stuff).
2. Install funplug manager latest version
3. Reboot
4. Keep reloading the web page until funplug manager comes up
5. Click on "Debian Squeeze" in the install section
6. Wait for the install to finish and the first reboot to start ssh (first boot can take 15-20 minutes to complete after the web installer reboots)
7. Log in via ssh as either the admin user and use sudo or as root/deb323
