What files if any does the DNS put onto drives?

I opined in a discussion on a different website that the drives did not contain only user data but also files necessary for the operation of the NAS and was challenged to cite the source for this.

In thinking about it later, I realized that this is something I've always assumed, partly because more than one partition is created, and that it might not in fact be true.

Is it?

Thanks.

Re: What files if any does the DNS put onto drives?

As mentioned, there is a second partition and mount, HD_a4, which contains the printer spooler directory (.lpd) and a system directory (.systemfile).

There may be other things depending on the options that you enable.

/dev/sda4             487M   11M  476M   3% /mnt/HD_a4

3 * (DNS-323 with 2 * 2TB) = 12TB Running FW v1.08 & FFP v0.5

Disk configuration are among the details are stored on the drives, allowing you to remove - as an example - a pair of disks in a RAID or JBOD configuration can be moved from a failed DNS-323 to a replacement unit - if you try this you will find that the new unit will maintain the same disk configuration as the old one.
