Hi,
I am trying to unbrick my dns 323 rev A1. I have made a serial from a nokia CA-42 according to wiki.

My problem: The serial connection between pc and dns323 seems to be "noisy". I get a lot of nonsens chars mixed in. I suspect the ca-42 (see log below).

I would be glad to get some guesses to what may be wrong and some ideas which may fix this.

I also have a Nokia USB adapter on my B1, and it works fine.
I had to power it up from the DNS.
Have you tried to transfer some file? Kermit verifies file packets checksums, so it is somehow resistent to line noise (it was designed to work on slow, noisy, old analogic telephone lines)

"I had to power it up from the DNS." What excaktly does this mean?

Does this mean smthing along the lines of.

1. connect ca-42 to dns323
2. connect power to dns323
3. connect ca-42 to pc
4. start and connect kermit
5. push on button on dns323

This may possibly be a fix. I dont think I have used this sequence.

I get no feedback to keyboard input.

I have made the basic shakedown sanity tests on the cable as described in the guide.

Tried the sequence above same results. Short dirty print then connection behaves as dead. No print from boot nor from keyboard.

I have ordered a second inexpensive nokia ca-42 maybe it fixes this problem.

When I cut the cable near the phone connector, four wires appeared. After identifying send, receive and ground, the other was to supply power to the circuitry in the usb socket. So I connected it to the dns 3.3 V supply.

It looks like there are two kind of Nokia cables. In one if them power to the circuitry is supplied through the usb socket, while in the other kind power is supplied through the phone. My cable is of the second kind.

Ok thanks mine had 3 wires. Powered from pc then.

Browsing the nokia forums, its seems like cheap e-bay style ca42s are sometimes broken.

Alright figured this one out. The Tx/Rx wires was mixed up. I missread or missunderstood the documenation.

I ruled this possibility out since the box actually talked back with some sort of data.

Anyhow the serial works now. But I am not home yet. I have backups of the flashdisk blocks mdblock1,2,3,4 and It would be nice if I could use them. Starting a new thread for this.
