I have been running the script described in http://dns323.kood.org/howto:backup which uses rsync to copy files to a second hard disk in my DNS-323 and once per week I swap out the backup drive with another and keep it offsite. The problem arose when one of the backup drives failed. So I replaced it with a new drive.
1st problem.
When the new backup drive was formatted the DNS-323 formatted my data drive. I have recreated most of my data from the second backup drive and copied it onto a new data drive. I would like to recoved the lost data on that data drive if anyone has any ideas?
2nd problem.
I would like to copy all the data including symbolic links to the new backup drive. I have tried "cp -a" which was fast at the start but slowed to a crawl after several hours of copying, to the extent it would take approx 1 month to copy 500GB of data. Next I tried "cp -a" on each days backup but it didn't copy the links so my 1TB drive is now full with only 10 days of backups but my 500GB drive has 386 days worth of backups and still has room. Is there a way of copying all the data from the one drive to the other in a reasonable amout of time?

1) As you will know doesn't formatting erase the data. Depending on the nature of the data (and the fragmentation level of the disk), you can get it back using tools like PhotoReq.
