Some background -
My normal, daily backups failed for 2 days. I noticed the DNS-323 was locked up both times. This was very unusual since I can't remember when (or even if) the box has locked up before.
I set the settings to force a filesystem check during next reboot and rebooted.
Now the Status page is showing a Filesystem Maintenance status of
checking...step 1: 76%
and it has been at that stage for over 13 hours.
The page is set to "autorefresh" and I do see the time adjust and the CPU usage changing, etc. so the screen and box seem not to be frozen however I have never see the Filesystem Maintenance task take this long.
There were no changes made to the box in a very long time.
Is there something I should do or check?

Do you have shell access? Have a look at the kernel log using dmesg. I think you'll see a lot of I/O errors.

We lost power today while I was at the office. Now, it is not booting up. Lights are on, etc. It is not responding via web browser nor on the ssh.
Any ideas what to do now?

I just tried it. Yes it does boot without disks.
Also - the fan spins when turned on, but stops. Is that 'normal' I assume it may be if the temperature is not high and with no drives and no front cover, I assume the temp is acceptable.

In that case check your power supply, and/or check if (one of) the disks draw too much current. A test for the latter could be if it functions normal in an usb enclosure.

According to the wiki the fan is temperature controlled. So yes, that can be normal.

I attached one of the drives to my desktop, it "appears" ok except I cannot see any files. I used the program ReclaiMe to see the files - I don't own a license for the program so I cannot copy the files off the hard drive.
I will try the other drive on Sunday when I am back where I have access to the drives.

In that case the disk is OK, in electrical sense. The disk spins up and moves it's heads. Of course it is still possible that the disk has problems, but that wouldn't disturb the booting of the NAS. So either the other disk is the problem, or the power supply is no longer able to supply the needed juice.
BTW, there is nothing special with the filesystem on that disk. Any Linux system should be able to read that disk. No need for a license on proprietary software.
