Just got my DNS-323, one question

I just received my DNS-323 and would like to move my files from my desktop to the NAS. I heard that the firmware 1.03 doesn't support unicode so I am wondering if I should wait until the official 1.04 firmware comes out before I make the move, since many of my files contains Chinese characters. I am also worrying about losing data when later I need to upgrade to 1.04.

I am moving to another country in November so very likely I will get rid of my desktop and mainly use DNS-323, besides my laptop, to store most of my data. Of course I will backup the most important ones on DVD/USB drives, but it's kinda difficult to backup the entire 500GB files.

Any suggestion?

Re: Just got my DNS-323, one question

As long as you have no Chinese characters in your filename, you are fine. But if you have Chinese characters in your file/folder name, you have two option:
1. Wait 1.04 or use 1.04 beta and samba 3.x with UTF8 for full unicode support.
2. use 1.03 and use easy search util to set your DNS-323 use Chinese as language. But this will not compatible with other language characters.

Use 1.04 beta, you may face some risks, especially for Microsoft office documents.
Use 1.03, I believe even upgrade to 1.04, native language still supported, but it will not be full unicode support.

Again, all those issues related to file/folder name only. Content of your file is not a matter.

You can also use TrueCrypt and create a encrypted image disk on the DNS-323 which you can mount. This will preserve the filenames and files etc...

All right, I guess I will have to wait until the official 1.04 firmware is out. I do have some file/folder names which are in Chinese.
Any idea when 1.04 will come out? All the previous firmwares are published in a 2-month period. Don't know if D-Link is still working in that pace.
